It has recently been quite cold here in Vermont. My '87 RRC doesn't like to run in the cold. when I start the truck it will run for about 10-15sec, then bog and die unless I push the accelerator. Until the truck warms up well, about 15 miles, it will try to stall when I come to a stop as well. once it gets warmed up it will idle reasonably well, and will normally do alright at a stop sign. what ails my rover? |

did you do a winter tune up. or have you tuned up recentley. i sugest plugs, wires , cap , rotor, timming check. have you cleand out you intake, do it! use high octane. let rover completely warm up before driving. you know she is fifteen years old now. think tune up time not wast deep powder |

tune up done, everything gone through. letting it warm up is a hassle, I have to sit with my foot on the gas, as it won't idle. If I spend the 15-20 min to let it warm up completely I could already be at work. and it is damn hard to not think of waist deep powder.....with 8-10 foot snow bank around the house. |

is your car fuel injected or is it running stromberg carbs.? check rover manual under mantence... clean plenum ventilation passageway. check vacuum advance for distributor..engine fails to idle- faulty bipass air valve or stepper motor... purge valve fully open.... there is a whole section in the manual that will help you with the problems described. i down loaded the manual from the net i belive it was spanish trail rover . com try there to find manual. that would be best bet. it says here engine stalls-loww idling check for air leaks, engine stalls contaminated fuel system, engine stalls- purge valve fully open. get the manual the list goes on and on.. |

You probably have the Lucas 4CU injection system. I´m not very familiar with Efi things, but have a book about the Bosch-L-Jetronic system (equivalent) - therefore some details now (excuse ´me). It says there is a cold start injector giving an extra jet of fuel when the engine and air is cold. This is controlled by a thermotime switch that closes the cold start injector if things (or a heating coil inside the switch itself) have warmed up enough. If I understand it right it usually closes after 7-8sec (after this time the needed fuel enrichemend drops vom facor 1.5 down to 1.25). And thereafter ECU will have to do the fuel enrichement by itself via the 8 injectors. In this situation the coolant temp sensor tells the ECU if still some extra fuel is necessary. The first 10sec after startup the "choke" is time-controlled, after that temperatur controlled. As this sensor (l/h side at front of the plenum chamber) is said to decay with age and it is recommended to change it anyway - I would do this first. (Later EFI systems (post 3.5l V8) don´t have this thermotime/cold-start things.) good luck hendrik |

I stumbled upon that rover manual one day... best darn find ever. I didn't want to tell anyone, because I didn't want the server to go down! *hushhh* |
