I'm looking to add lights to the roof rack. I want to ad 4 Hella 500s (2 on the right and 2 on the left with a custom bracket to allow 2 in the space of one-if possible) to light up the woods and such. I picked the 500s b/c they are cheap (I live in the city-theft) and I would use it for the woods and not on high speed runs. I already have 2 Hella 4000s on the brush bar. Can one battery handle this? This is probably a novice question but I thought that I would ask for opinions.
Thanks
Jack

Jack,

Do the math. Assuming your Hella 4K's are running at 110 watts, divide that by 12 and you get the amp draw which is 9.16 x 2 Hellas = 18.32 amps.

Now add the total wattage of your Hella 500's and perform the same equation. Add that result to the amps of the 4k's and you now have the total amp draw of your acc. light package.

A good battery is important, but more important is the total amp load that your D1 altenator can support.

4x55watts/12=18.34+18.32=36.66amps

So, I should be safe?

thanks Paul

Hell I don't know! :)

What is your altenator rating and AMP Hour rating of your battery?

Remember Jack, that 36.66 amps is on top of everything else that your LR needs power to operate. If that is all you are running, I would think you would be okay.

Now, I drive a D2 that comes with a 130 amp altenator and I have upgraded my battery to a 900 CCA energizer. My total light package draws 60amps and that is with them all turned on. The tach doesn't even budge when I hit the sun.

Do a keyword search on Hella, lights, or aux lights and you will see tons of info for your D1.

Hey you drunken Sailor, How the hell are you?

I have to be honest Jason, Kyle provided much assistance on IM when I was originally researching the Hella's.

Doing well ya Jarhead. Trek rear, LR hitch and SD rack are on. RTE front slim w/A-bar and sliders going on this weekend with John's help at his shop. Shopping for aux sunshine and a lift by spring-time brother. Need to sell the FJ-60 first though.

I have 4x130W 4000s and 10 x 55W halogen work lights, totalling 1070W, or 90 amps. I have kept them all on for reasonable periods of time with the engine idling, although I doubt if the idle speed can keep up with that kind of current for ever. So I think you're safe, even at idle.

Hey Sailor,

I am starting the research for a winch; which of course leads me to look at the RTE Front Bumper for the Pig........ :)

90 amps?! Damn, that must be bright. Dean, do you have a pic of that?

dcf0002.jpg You can see the front hellas and three side lights. There's another 3 on the other side, and four at the rear. Dean
