I just got back from NAIAS and I had some good conversation with the Land Rover representatives. While I was happy to see a Defender on display and the huge video screen had clips of serious off-roading, only one of the representatives seemed to know the first thing about off-roading. All the sales pitches seemed to be made with city driving and luxury as priority. One of the reps told me that Land Rover is planning on making sure that the Discovery will never be out classed off road by the BMW X5 (not hard to do) and that they do not intend to let Ford “Explorerize” the Discovery. He could not explain why U.S. Discos don’t have CDL, other than saying that people in the U.S. don’t need it / don’t use it and that not having it saves users repair costs. Any one else get weird responses when they ask a dealer about this?
The Land Rover exhibit was one of the nicer ones and it seemed to attract people from a wide range of demographics.

detroit auto show is simply amazing. went to the SF one for the first time and it was very lame.
