This retro to the DII CDL utilizing an electric solenoid/switch from inside the vehicle is featured in the Jan 2003 LROI magazine. It can be found at www.discoparts.com. Does anyone have any experience with this retro. to a DII or does anyone have an opinion of application? Your info. is always well received (positive & negative)

I installed one in my D2. I like it a lot. Push a button and the center diff is locked. Not as cheap as some of the other solutions out there, but very elegant. The jury is still out on how it will hold up in the long run.

Talked to a field rep today and he said that CDL is supposed to be back in mid-03 for the NAS market, but this is from the same company that said trailer wiring would be out 9 months ago.

Anything that relies on electrical power immediately has its limitations. Great Basin Rovers(GBR) sells a kit too. Assuming it is the same type of kit mentioned above, the kit was developed and tested in Australia about two years ago.

The kit is an expensive solution and if it malfunctions, the cost to repair/replace parts could be expensive too.

From what I understand, the kit works just fine. It is completely compatiable with the ETC. In fact, with the CDL engaged, the ETC rarely activates.

I have one of the first D2's without the CDL stud. The kit GBR sells only works with the CDL stud. However, Bill at GBR says that they are working on a kit that will retrofit missing external CDL studs. Additionally, they are researching the possibility of fitting an automatic torque biasing center differential.

That's good news to me, but the automatic torque biasing center diff is new to me. I have no experience with this concept. I am exchanging emails with Bill at GBR's right now. Anything I learn from Bill will be passed on to this thread.

I think there is a torque biasing CD out there that will work already for the D2. Problem was it was almost as expensive as a new t-case.

I believe so Al. I think the torque biasing is characteristic of a limited slip. The Quaiffe that GBR sells runs a little over a grand.

Bill at GBR's is working to replace all of the parts deleted by LR's bad decision. However, the price tag is likely to be a bit high too.

Speaking of adding CDL to late model D2's. It almost seems like you should be able to engage the CDL thru the side access panel to the right (when facing from the front) of where the old stub used to be. Obviously you'd need a "replacement" plate with some sort of opening, but the manual pages I've seen look like somethink could be done. I don't have the tools and especially any metal working skills.

I'm really curious what GBR is doing for their "replacement kit" that BW mentioned. Keep us posted.
