Hi guys,
Wow - I haven't had to be here in a couple months - thats amazing! I jest. Anyway, 2 questions:
1) front left (drivers) wheel clicks/grinds a little when wheel is turned fairly hard. That's been going on a while. Also, now that its 0 degrees, its starting to "howl" at times while making low-speed left turns. What do you think? Bearings? or the whole hub? what?

2) Key can't turn over/is stuck "off" most times. I've been using 2 keys and locking the key in the car - in the ignition, not shut all the way off. I've heard "unbend it", "get a new copy" -- I've heard it all. The Tumbler in the key-column is garbage. They sell a TON of these. However, they're $300+ !!!! Any idea where I can get another w/matching key?

J - I think these guys are more the "rah rah rah" for LR and "lets be rich and put big tires on" as opposed to guys like you that bought the truck for value & utility and can't afford the glitz. Maybe try a jeep site or something where the people are more mechanical and less fashionable.

"rah rah rah" for LR and "lets be rich and put big tires on"

damn, you nailed it jmaxi

JA, 1) Sounds like CV joint. If you can turn a wrench, you can investigate yourself with the right resources, but maybe you'd be better off having a mechanic look at it. 2) try lubricating your tumbler, but it may indeed be shot. If the dealer is too much, look for an ignition tumbler at a junk yard that comes with the keys. If you're really lucky, maybe you can pick up the ignition tumbler and door locks all keyed alike.

rah rah rah LR, now let's go be rich!.....douchebag

mechanic is the only way to go since I have no garage, my driveway is pounded down, frozen-snow, and its 7 degrees in the SUN right now. Its a cv - that's my fear. f'ing 118K and it started. Unbelievable. Anyway, the tumbler's been lubed, graphited, etc. It sucks. I already lost the directional lever (shorted) - $220 to replace AND have to pull the wheel off (took to mechanic when couldn't pull stuck wheel). The tumbler PART is $350. It kills me. Rotors are only $40! I got 4 tires for $279..

Yeah,
Go for the Jeep site, cause I never see Jeeps with oversized tires and ridiculous suspension. HAH!! The best thing I see about Jeeps out here is that some kid can jack it up 3 feet in the air, and then try and race me at the light, because he is under the impression that a good 4wd has a good 1/4 mile time...hehehe..jackass...
I think that Jeep is all about fashion and none too much on mechanical. Just look at the whole round headlight thing, they judge their Jeeps by the shape of the headlights. If they were really into the mechanics of the vehicle they would have bought a Landy, and probably paid less for it too....

JA,

i bought a tumbler from elgin auto in IL for $10 took it and my tumbler set to the local locksmith and he used parts from my bad one and the used one to make one good one with my original key, he charged me $15.

make some phone calls to locksmiths around you and you will find one that says its simple bring it in, thats your guy

Jmax,

you are so full of fucking shit its pethetic, have you looked around this site? have you read all the archives? have you seen the tech articles that will walk a newbie step by step thru almost all the needs of a Disco owner? I'll bet not, because if you had you wouldent be spoutin such utter bullshit! I have been to tons of sites on the web and I have yet to see a site that has such a great group of people from different walks of life helping each other keep there trucks running and outa the over priced hands of dealerships. and all for FREE!

JMAX...SCREW YOU!

aHAAAAA. Look guys, its JMAX.
I LOVE this site. Problem is, I couldn't help JA and it seems everyone goes for the TOP issue or the "hot one" with a lot of hits/discussion. This guy was IGNORED until I lit some candles with some contraverial text. Sorry to play the joke, but I never want to see a LR buddy down on his luck without a prayer, especially one who can't hardly afford to drive one of these blessed beasts. Thus, if I have to sacrifice my name to inspire people to help a guy out - so be it. He's getting help, and you're helping. Everyone's happy.

Jmax,
its funny you say that - because i was thinking "what a clown - but hey - at least people are talking now -- thanks jerk!" You stil didn't offer any solution though, but enough people are so what the heck - small world. Ty.

Musky - question. You state: "i bought a tumbler from elgin auto in IL for $10 took it and my tumbler set to my locksmith"... I'm confused.
1) Did you buy a LR tumbler from a regular auto dealer? Or a non-LR tumber?
2) You took the new tumbler and the old one to a locksmith?
3) how easy is it to take the tumbler off?
4) do electrical plugs match up with new one (if non-LR) and are there alarm issues?
VERY INTERESTED !

JA,

my whole tumbler fell out in my wifes hands, turns out there was a recall on 94's for a abrasion of the airbag leads. in doing that recall they omited to replace the pin that holds the cylinder in the lock.(dealer friend told me this was common back in 94/95) I got it working but it still had some issues. I then went to a salvage yard and bought the whole cylinder/tumbler/key from a 95 disco. I took it as well as mine to a local locksmith and he combined the parts to make me one cylinder set up with my original key. I then reinstalled it in my truck myself.the locksmith told me that when the cylinder becomes unseated you end up bending the liftpins and break the springs causing the lock to stick and that no amount of graphite will fix that.when you install the new one you need to hold all the little rectangle things in as you slide it into the bore.make sure it goes all the way in or it wont engage the square drive at the bottom that is actually the electric part of the switch. compared to the lock mechanism of say a mercedees or BMW these things are shit. no wonder they are so easy to steal.

good luck

thom

Corey, i'm one of them. i actually prefer the looks of my range rover's headlights to the disco's.

BTW - all people who I ever met and who used the word "Landy" were either British (or Aussies, or Kiwis), or [what John Lee and Leslie Bright discussed recently]. I thought you lived in Utah...
