Help.

I don't like the thule bars but I have this nice thule box (thanks John and Bill B.!) and I want it on the roof for my upcoming trips (yes plural) to canada.

According to the manual, you are limited to 35 lbs on the roof rack bars (probably because of the plastic (not metal) tabs that locks them into place) and then LR states that they are not for off-road use.

Having said that, I have seen some stock roof rack bars from LR that were bolted on rather than clipped on. A friend has them on his 97 SE7. They will support a lot of weight (say 75 lbs or so).

I'd not risk putting the box on the stock bars (clip-on type). I'd recommend spending the money to get the Thule or Yakima bars.

Thanks,
Mike B.

nevermind. Thule box is 37in wide, stock rails are 45in wide. I am not mounting it to those stock POS pop in things.

who has some thule bars for sale?

Ron,

I have some Thule bars for sale. I originally bought them for the Disco but they were just as wide as the disco and I used them for a long time. I then decided to get a larger size b/c it was easier for me to put the carrier on the truck by myself and remove it. This is important b/c my wife tried to drive the truck into the garage with the carrier on.
I think the expensive part wouldn'r be the bars but the clamps for the side rails.

I need them for tomorrow. I have a solution that involves duct tape. Wish me luck :)

Hey ron, if you get 4 u clamps from Home dopo, and two lengths of black pipe, you can twist the clamps in such a way to capture both the black pipe and the stock rails coming from the roof! this will hold alot of weight! Good luck! Have pic of this somewhere if you need, just e mail me!

I made a supid mistake by hooking my "J Channels" kayak rack directly to the stock bars.
We were about 90 miles into our trip to Savannah, GA when we went over a bridge in KY, heard a large BANG, the truck swerved slightly then instantly sped up. My sister who was in the back seat yelled OH SHIT! I looked up through the sunroof and could see part of my kayak about 50 feet in the air, then out my rear door window I could see it "landing" on a bridge rail, bounce again in the air and slide along the highway with cars behind me erraticaly trying to dodge the airborne-pavement sliding kayak. (Wow, that was a long sentence). The stress from the pressure of winds and speed (70+ mph) just ripped the factory bars apart where the two clips go into the fixed rack rails.

The kayak was severely scratched but not destroyed. We all had to get a change of underwear. Funny thing about two sunroofs though.

My wife and I held the kayak on top of the Disco with our hands through the front roof, and my sister held onto it through the back sunroof. I knew there was a reason for both of them :)

After a very long and slow drive to the nearest Lowes, I made a rack out of 2" pvc pipe and cheapo tie downs and made it to Savannah. When we arrived at our place, I promptly ordered the Thule "High Stackers"? towers and bars. The trip home was much nicer.

I should have known better not to mount the kayak rack, or anything of weight for that matter on the factory rack. But hey, it makes for a good story!

I rachet strapped it on. I think it will be ok. I used the rachet strap to compress the two side togther in addition to going all the way around the box. This should prevent the stock bars from flexing outward leading to failure, and no matter what the rachet straps will keep in on there.

I have to buy some box tube so when I do I will make some CB thule bars.
