Greetings all, Just recently, when the vehicle is cold and I start it up, there is a rattling sound that is coming from the underside of the vehicle. It only lasts about 10-15 seconds, and as the disco warms up the rattling disappears. Could this noise be associated with my catalytic converter? Any diagnosis is greatly appreciated. It is a DII, with 72,000 kilometers. Cheers, Arman |

Arman, Check out the rubber attachment that connects the muffler system to the frame. If it lets go, your tubing will hit the frame and rattle like all hell. Every two weeks, I have to slide it back over to the detent on my '00 D2. Paul |

Cheers Paul, I will do that, i was actually playing around with both the rubber attachments the other day, when under the vehicle and may have moved them the wrong way. This is what is so great about this site, the sharing of credible knowledge and experiences. Again, thanks Paul. Arman. |

FWIW, cats tend to rattle most when hot and at idle. Mine are shot, but they only start to really rattle once everything has warmed up. |

mine must be totally shot then because they rattle all the time. even when I close the door! I'm just going to do away with them when I get around to it. Jaime |

I experience the same issue, however mine sounds more like the valves ticking. After about 10 seconds it stops. |

Arman, I guess its just early because my first thought when reading the subject line of this was that your cat (pet) was sleeping on the warm engine block and the rattling was the poor animals bones! I listen to car talk alot on NPR and so many people call in with noises like this, and its just a loose heat sheild or pipe fitting that shortly goes away once the car warms up a bit and the metal expands to lodge the piece firmly back in place. Could this be the case? |

Andy, I think it might be associated with what Paul suggested, which are the rubber attachments that support the exhaust. I was fiddling with them the other day, and actually did move them. When I get home this evening, I am going to have a look. Thanks lads for the responses. Cheers, Arman. |

I'm with Andy - rattle on startup (not an engine knock) is heat shield, after warmup = cats. My cats are getting bad enough that they now rattle pretty much all the time at idle. Just waiting until I get a new job (or until they fall apart completely) to replace. I may try putting screws through them to stop the rattle, as suggested by someone. |
