I'm home sick, but got my discoweb DVDs just in time for my cold (honest, I didn't stay home to watch movies) Watching "Hole in the Wall" got me curious just how "modified" the discos in the movie are... Being a Disco owner for just over a month I'm still assessing what I want to add to it. The previous owner had done a bunch (ARB winch bumper, bilstein's, new springs) and I'm wanting to do a bit more. I have diff guards waiting to install and then I'm not sure (sliders?). I also got "Back East" but living in the SW, the terrain in the hole movie is a lot like I encounter.

Basically, I'd love to be able to tackle a trail like that, and I just want my rig trail-ready. I guess my biggest concern is my tires - P245/75/16 Bridgestone Dueler ATs. They only have 5k on them, but the P rating bothers me. I'm thinking something a little more aggressive and probably taller.

The cold medicine is making me ramble ... my apologies. The point is: is a rig with a mild (~2-inch lift I'm guessing) capable of that kind of trail?

Do you have at least a rear locker? Lockers or ETC is necessary.

It's a 96 Disco, so it has CDL.

hole in the wall? sounds like the knock off porno version of "hole in the ROCK" discoweb movie..

if you added HD rear axel and a locker in the rear your truck would more than ready to handle that trail. i think you could make it with what you have now actually.

Yeah, you probably could. None of the D2's had lockers, but the 110 and D1 were all locked i belive, I'm not sure if Scott's D1 was locked or not. The most important item on a trail like that is another truck, I would not recommend doing it solo.

I agree - If you were going to try it open-diff, having another vehicle in front to give you a yank when necessary would be key.

You could also do it with a D2 with ETC, but I think we are talking about non-ETC equipped vehicles here?

I did it without lockers in a stock D1. However, I was with Bill Burke and it was a number of years ago, possibly the trail is worse now.

I think the trail is doable without lockers. The second (or more) vehicle suggestion is more for safety. It is a very remote area.

Is going out with Bill Burke worth the cost? ($295 for a two day seminar) He's coming to Phoenix in April and I'm debating whether it might be worth the expense.

I just got the disco and would like to explore its capabilities more.

I've done quite a bit of 4wheeling, but its usually by myself (sometimes a passenger), and usually for my job so I wimp out because I don't want to get stuck in a place where I'd either be found by smugglers (not good) or by Border Patrol (not bad) or Mexican authorities (not good, especially if they are on the U.S. side of the border).

Hole in the wall was easy with stock diffs - even loaded with 10 days camping gear.

trail possible w/ open diff., but do your self a favor and get some sliders first.

If you are beginning to learn how to wheel, taking a class with Bill will be very beneficial. IMHO, Hole in the Rock is not easy since there are places where you could do damage if you do not know what you are doing and/or if you are not really cautious.

Also I am talking about the eastern leg, which is all I have done (the one with the chutes).

I second that. Bill is very experienced, he also puts together good trips where he takes care of everything. He is a nice guy, too. I haven't been on any of his trips or taken his classes, but I have met him on the trail and seen him in action. He works hard to get you through the trail.

"He works hard to get you through the trail."

Absolutely.

We did the trail with him, and if I had the time this April, I would do it again. The trip was safe and fun, and for a newcomer, worth it.

That being said, there are many ways to skin the proverbial cat -- there are habits and approaches to wheeling you might pick up from him that you might question later.

Geez, Jeffry,

If you are even close to getting stopped by mexican authorities, you must be doing some trails in the VERY southern part of the state. There are plenty of trails in the Phoenix area, and even better ones just as close as Superior. If you feel like doing some wheeling, drop me a line. I know lots of good trails and wont charge you for it ;)

I'm in Tucson and most of my wheeling has been work related doing photography along the border (both sides). All sorts of men with guns down there and you just don't quite know who is who. A colleague was detained by mexican military for several hours on one outing. I've been lucky though, so far.

I'd love to go sometime, just need to make the time. Have an 8-month-old so my days off I try devoting to her (but the disco needs attention too).

Thats cool. I will let you know next time I am down in the area. We have an office down there, so I get down about once a month. Know any good trails down there or would you want to hit Box Canyon near Florence or somehting in between Phx and Tuc.?

Let me know

Jess

Don't know any of the places around here, never done much recreational wheeling, but want to do more. I do know there are lots of places to go, I'm just don't know them. I'm not doing as much of the work related stuff as I once did, so now I want to get out and just enjoy myself. I'm off on Fridays and Saturdays, maybe with enough advance notice we can figure something out ...

I did actually sign up for a LR Scottsdale activitiy to Bulldog Canyon - I figured it was a chintzy way of getting out on some trails. I don't expect much challenge out of it but it should be fun.

True.

Jeffry, I just got my SG bumper in, and am installing on Sunday. Yes, I am painfully aware that it is Superbowl Sunday, but am starting at 6am so that I can get it done before the game. Point is that once that is on, I am going to be ITCHING to go. Jon Santana came out a while ago to visit relatives, and I took him on Trail 42, pictures of which you can see on the opening page and galleries of Discoweb. It is a fun trail. Others include Box Canyon, Telegraph, Coke Ovens, Martinez Mine Trail, etc.
There are lots down by Superior/Globe/Florence, and I am familiar with many.

Is your disco stock?

Jeffry,

As Jess mentioned, you've got tons of places to go with in minutes of Tuscon.

Take a look at this link:
http://abell.as.arizona.edu/~hill/4x4/#top

I took my D2 (when it was still stock) to the trails Jess mentioned above and experienced no problems. It's best to go with someone in some of those areas. I've driven all day in and around Box Canyon in 120 degree heat and never saw a soul. If I had broken down, I would've had a big problem.

I live down in Sierra Vista, maybe we could get together for a ride sometime. I'm away on business right now but I'll be back in town next month.

Thanks for that link, there are a tremendous number of places in the backyard to go play.

I'd definitely like to get out with some of you guys who know the area and know what the vehicles are capable of. I've had it for a month and just have not had a chance to get out. Sickness, child, home stuff, you know, the usual things. Need to make a plan and get some of us Arizona folks together ...

Take a look at the Morman Trail wepage on that link. You'll see over a dozen photos of non-rover vehicles covering the same ground as was shot in Axel's video.

The photo's are a little too big and it takes a long time to load them all with dial up, but it's worth it. Nice pics.
