I have about three pits on my windshield where a couple of them have small cracks spreading from them. If there are heating elements in the windshield, I'm guessing it's not cheap to replace the whole thing. Any recommendations on how to best prevent a major crack? Is it a simple as getting it filled in at some windshield repair place? tia, Ivan |

I used to work at a BMW dealer in IL. There are windsheild specialists that will come in and repair nicks, and chips out of windshields. I do not know about cracks though. They take a kind of high tech clear suction cup and put it over the chip in the glass and then run some plastic compound through the vaccum that is created in the suction cup. It makes the chip about 1/5-1/10 its original size. Good Luck |

There are afew windshild repair places in my town. I have has some rock chips repaired and in talking to the repair person she told me that she could repair up to a 12 inch crack. The heated windshilds are about 700 dollars not instaled and not including the 200 dollar window seal as well. |

the technique usually involves drilling a small hole on both ends of the crack to prevent it from spreading, then filling in the drill hole with clear epoxy and buffing it to smooth. i'd call any repair shap and ask them about it. you might loose the heating elements where the drilled holes are. rd |

When I got mine filled, they stopped when they saw the heating elements and mentioned it to me (duh). They said it might not work after since as Rob said, they drill into the glass (mine were just pits with minor cracks starting) and can damage the wires. Since my windshield doesn't work, it didn't matter to me. That other option of replacing it for close to $1000 just wasn't appealing. pwc |

I always assumed that like rear defrost wires, if there is a break in one "wire" (line), the rest will work fine...so maybe when drilling a hole in the front windshield, only a line or two would not work...but this is just conjecture on my part. At Pep Boys Auto store I picked up a product that fills the type of chip this post has been talking about. It has a plunger and a tube of filler and is suppose to fll in chips and small cracks. I don't believe any drilling is involved so maybe this product will do the trick. I won't be trying it untill the weather warms up. |

In poor taste: At a garage I used to work at, one day a car pulls in and a woman gets out. She says to me that she has a crack in her fender (I forget the make, but it was an early plastic car). I said I couldn't repair the crack, but I could stop it from extending. She said fine, so I drilled a hole right in the end of the crack. She looked at me in supprise, and asked what good that did. I explained material stress and such to her, but in essence said, the hole stops the crack from getting longer. She looked at me like a light had just gone off in her head, "So *that's* what my navel is for!" |

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure if my heating elements work anyways. I'll run the idea by my mechanic first. $1000 for a new windshield, ouch! |
