Last night filled up the tank on our '97 Disco, got in line for the car wash (~20 minute wait)finally got into the car wash (automatic "touch-less")and just as the wash was ending the engine stalled. Tried to restart it numerous times. It would occasionally catch but wouldn't run. We had to push it out of the wash bay and wait for AAA (3+hours!:( )to tow it home.
This morning I tried to start it and it acts like it maybe has either water in the gas or an intermittent fuel pump. I got it to run for about 5 minutes, but then it stalled again. I replaced the fuel filter and dropped 2 bottles of "dry-gas" into the tank. No joy. I've also checked/re-seated the fuel pump connection at the driver's side rear above the fuel tank. Now it won't even "catch".
How can I check the fuel pump to make sure it's running? When the engine was running this morning I could here the fuel pump (as I usually can) running. Can anyone tell me what relays to check behind the glove box? Thanks in advance!

Well,

This question pops up a lot and usually the answer is to check the distributer for water ingress... Anyone else?

Cheers,

check all electrical or ignition components as previous..... coil.... high tension leads.... check to see if the high tension lead has popped off the coil or distributor cap..?

First thing I did was lift the hood to check for anything that was waterlogged. The ignition was dry as a bone (it's a '97 so no distributor). I've been poking around this afternoon and am convinced the fuel pump isn't running. I checked the Schreader valve on the fuel rail and there isn't any pressure. The connections in the left wheel well are good. I do hear a relay or two click on then off when the key is put in the "run" position, but no noise from the fuel pump. Anyone know which wires on the harness in the left wheel well are power to the pump? I could check and see if there is power there if I knew which wire was which.

The engine ecu is on passenger side of engine compartment. It probably got wet in car wash. There was a bulliten by LRNA years ago about this ECU getting wet. Should be covered by black plastic in engine compartment aganist right inner fender near firewall. Take it off, dry it out and dry plugs going into it. If its not that, you got bad fuel.

Joe, I haven't looked at the ECU yet, but will do so tomorrow. Are you able to remove whatever cover is on the ECU in order to "dry it out"?

The cover pops off. It has plastic press fittings on it. There is a chance though that drying it won't help. I got mine wet dancing in some big puddles during a downpour and the water shorted it so I had to get a new one. I since have sealed the plastic cover to the fender with silicon.
I also tend to wash my Disco more often at the hand spray ones so I can try to avoid dousing the engine bay.

Hello all,

Finally got the Disco running this morning. I checked the ECU and it was bone dry. Tried starting it again after putting everything back together and she caught a little. Waited a little longer after moving it into the sun and tried again. Success!!! :) Guess it was some water in the line that had frozen. Hadn't had that happen since living in Upstate New York! I guess a bottle of dry gas every now and then during Winter will be the regimen from now on. Thanks to all who wrote in with suggestions!!!

I'd also suggest not washing the disco. :)
