...."The Two Towers", that is. Just got back from a return trip to Middle Earth, and once more I say, "WOW!". Peter Jackson and friends are geniuses. With a film that moves that fast, with the unusual names of characters and concurrent story lines (not to mention the, uh, decades, that have passed since I read the books), more than one viewing is necessary for me. Not to mention the flat-out thrill ride it is. The next eleven months are going to draaaaag for me.....Bring on "The Return of the King"!

I agree. I enjoyed it even more the second time around because I wasn't so inundated with the visual stuff.

KJ, have you seen the extended version of the Fellowship?

Alan,

No, I have the VHS version of "Fellowship", not the DVD, so I only see the film itself. We watched it last night again, and I still love that one, too. Brilliant film-making! Do you have the DVD? These flicks might be the thing that pushes me to break down and get a DVD player.

Karen, can't get enough of that Elf-y stuff! :)

KJ,

But, there's 2 dvd versions... there's the regular one, which is the movie + stuff, and then there's the extended version DVD, which the movie has ~+30min more, in addition to more stuff....

Yes, I'm a sucker, I have both DVD versions....

:)

KJ, ya if you're going to buy the DVD set (when you get your DVD player, which this as good as any reason :)) buy the 4 disc set (comes in a green box). That one has the extended play and a whole wack of extra "making of" and "behind the scenes" stuff. But in my opinion, the extended version is better than the original. I liked the original a lot but the extended version gives the story a more well rounded feel. Trust me, if you're as big a fan as you sound, the money is well worth it for the 4 disc set.

Break down and get the DVD player (hell they aren't event that expensive anymore). The extended version is bad ass.

O.K. boys, you're on! Now, care to give me some good advice about buying a DVD player? Seriously, I just haven't felt like trying to get up to speed on DVD players. I'm woefully behind in my technologies, and it's putting me off making a few decisions, this being one. Thanks for any guidance.

Karen, wants to be bad-ass, too! :)

check www.crutchfield.com I believe they have a very good explanation of various features and will give you a good idea of which ones they need.

I'v a friend with a DVD player that lets you fast forward all the warnings and junk, or it can also skip the menu system and just play... It ignors whatever crap they put on the disks to keep you from skiping certain stuff. just FYI,its kinda nice.

I second Alan and Carter. My wife got me the extended for Christmas and it's amazing. I'm a serious fan (read the book almost every year since I was 16) and enjoyed the theatrical release of the first movie a lot. When I saw the extended it moved the film to a new level.

There's more of Aragorn's back-story in there and such, but my favorite thing about the extra 30 minutes is how much some of those lost scenes help develop the relationship between the Fellowship.

And of course the volumes of behind-the-scenes stuff is priceless if (like me) you really like the methods used by film-makers.

oh and Karen I would consider one of the "all in one deals" that comes with a reciever w/ built in dvd player, five sattelite speakers, and a sub. You will get the DVD quality picture and the suround sound for a fairly low price, sure it won't be AS good as if you bought seperate components but hey your still stuck in the stone age with that VCR so it doesn't matter THAT much to you does it???

IMHO, FWIW, blah blah blah

...and while you're at it KJ, you might as well pick up a 53" HDTV. That's an absolute must for the viewing experience. Because it's so long, a nice Lazy Boy chair and a mini-fridge next to it would also help.

We just want to make sure your viewing experience is first class. :)

53"???? How are you supposed to replicate the movie experience w/ that tiny thing?? :)

Seriously though I would look along these lines:

http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-mDfDGhcIvxd/ProdGroup.asp?c=4&s=0&g=37700&td=1&tn=0&l=&a=&o=p

Yeah, a little more expensive than just buying a player but you will only be experiencing half of the improvements brought on by the DVD if you don't have the 5:1 sound.

LOL! Leave it to my pals on DiscoWeb! What? No plasma TV? Am I going to have to delve into that alone???? What I REALLY need is a sugar daddy....like Carter's! LOL! Sorry Carter, I couldn't resist after that stone-age comment and all...

Karen, who thought Crutchfield only did car stereos!

LOL, yeah we are the guys that buy these $60K trucks :) and still have to pump more money into them, what did you expect us to say??? Go down to Wal-Mart and buy the cheapest DVD player they have??? Come on, you know us better than that.

ok, ok....how about 63"? If you sit about 5' from it, you should get about the same effect as a movie screen.

Anything else we need to add to KJ's ultimate home entertainment system??

Oh yea, if you're going to buy a DVD player, might as well get a 5 or 10 disc changer one. :) Don't need to get up.

Karen,

Walmart is selling Apex DVD players for $46, they are adequate, and play all the modern formats too. I picked one up the other day, and like it.

Dean

Ps it does make a bit of a vibration noise sometimes, but hell for that price I can trach it a get another one when it dies.

don't buy an apex. DVD players are not meant to be disposable. Buy a Panasonic or Sony

Well I have had an Apex for some time now and have had no problems, plus it’s played about everything I’ve put in it, even SVCDs I’ve burnt on the computer. Really depends what you want, but for a entry level system you’d be pressed to beat an Apex DVD and a Onkyo Dolby Digital/DTS HTS at Circuit City for $499. I have the speakers and am very pleased, of course I don't watch movies all day long and am going to spend my money on a HTS accordingly.

BTW
Ran across TTT on the net last night in a SVCD format, how the hell do they come up with this stuff.

A friend of mine got a 7-disc DVD changer from Costco a month or so ago for maybe $120. It's a major brand--Panasonic, I believe. IMHO with prices like that there's just no reason to skimp and get an Apex.

Dan, I'm glad you enjoy yours. They're not all bad! But it seems like the quality is quite variable on them. Hmm, not unlike Land Rovers, I suppose. So I guess it is apropos to recommend Apex DVD players to Land Rover owners ;-)

They basically record the movie with a video camera in the theater and transfer it to disc. Bootlegged movies suck have not seen a good quality one yet

No, that's not the case, although I know it happens. I had Spiderman way before it was released. Video quality was as good, if not better than VHS, but no surround. Given who is offering this movie up I'm sure it's as good. Fills four SVCDs, here's a link, but understand it leads to an adult site.

Karen,

My favorite part of that flick was the Tree Scenes. That was incredible when they all came together to kick some Sorcerer ass. :)

Yeah Paul, Saruman couldn't believe his eyes when the Ents trudged in to stomp his enclave. Made this little tree-hugger's eyes go all misty (G).

Karen :) P.S. Thanks for the DVD player leads guys, I'll be following up! It's time.....

Nope, local movie theater has an IMAX screen, and they show some regular movies on it. Right now they are showing the Lion King all day long, except for one TTT showing at 9:15 pm - movie didn't end until after 12:20 am!

It's a regular 70mm film, not IMAX format so it doesn't use the full height of the screen (does use the full width though). First time I went to see a movie in that theater made the mistake of sitting too close to the screen. You really have to sit more than halfway back to be able to just take in the whole picture.

The sound is just so much better in that theater...

They had Star Wars Episode II playing on our IMAX theatre a couple months ago but that was formatted for IMAX screens so it was HUGE. That would be pretty cool to see TTT on an IMAX screen though.

KJ, think you could handle a 3 story tall Aragorn or Legolas?? :)

I have an Apex 1100W from Walmart. I actually bought it a while back just so I could get the "Hole in the Rock" DVD. The first one I bought didn't work, but I exchanged it and have had no problems with the second one. I have a couple friends who have them for a while and they have had no problems. If you want to play SVCDs and other formats, you need to get one with a serial number that starts with 05 or less. The new ones are 08 and they don't play all the other formats. Plus the older ones have lots of cracks available, like a crack that lets you run it through the VCR and region cracks. Here are some links that discuss them:
