I installed a new ARB non-air bag bull bar on my 97 XD this weekend and would like some DWEB experts feedback.

1) Removed OEM Brush Bar and Bumper;

COMMENT - very easy, took 20 minutes.

2) Opened bag with ARB kit with nuts, bolts, etc. - Ok, there are enough to build a new Disco in that bag! I only needed 4 bolts, nuts, washers to install the bull bar;

COMMENTS - The bolts that came with the kit were slightly too large in diameter on the shoulder to fit through the holes in the frame ends, so I used the old ones, should I have drilled out the frame holes and used the new bolts? It seems like it would not be very strong with just the 4 factory mounts being used, are there additional spots to drill and add bolts to strengthen this setup? Any other suggestions on this segment?

Is the rest of the huge pile of nuts and bolts really just for the winch mounting?

Any Ideas of where you are supposed to mount the front License plate? I would not worry except in CA, you will get a ticket for not having one.

There is a huge gap of open space between the grill and the bumper, does the winch cover most of this?

OVERALL INSTALLATION COMMENTS/CONCERNS: Very Easy, it only took about an hour and a half to install it by myself. Now that I have removed the crush cans, does anyone have any real-life feedback on the airbag deploying and injuring the driver or passenger from using a non-air bag setup?

Thanks DWEB...!

Use the bolts that came with the Bumper. The factory bolts aren't that strong. I know on the D2 I had to drill out the holes bigger and there was another hole to drill from the bottom but the D1 mount is different so I don't know about additional holes to drill.

yes most of those other misc. nuts and bolts are to mount the winch, and the big gap is filled mostly by the winch as well. as for the plate, there are to bolt holes just above the winch mount for your plates, i say screw it though im in NY and they say they will ticket you but i have driven throuhg countless police check points and they just wave me on. looks better without the plate there too.

As far as where do you put the front license plate - stick it underneath, use it to protect the finish of your steering guard!

They do ticket here in VA for not having a plate up front. I had a friend get a ticket for not having a plate on his new car. They didn't even pull him over for a moving violation. They just noticed he didn't have a front plate, pulled him over and gave him a ticket.

Unfortunately as bad as it will look, I am sure I will eventually get a ticket with out the plate. San Diego Police are pretty good about that.

Todd,
First, the bull bar is mounted via 6 bolts, not four. I have a D1 so I assume your's is the same as mine. Do not use the factory bolts for previosly said reason. Some one sells a mounting bracket for your front plate...I think it may be 4x4 connection. Oh, where were the crush cans that you removed? Bar or truck?

James -

There are only 4 matching bolt holes to mount the ARB on my 97 D1 on both the ARB and the frame. I had been told by several people that the ARB mounts exactly the same as the OEM brush bar. If there are 6 bolts that need to be used, then I am not aware of the location of the other 2 or I have some drilling to do...which I was under the impression you did not have to do with this modification?

the crush cans are part of the OEM bumper that was removed, this is also something that was explained to me as normal for this modification.

Thanks for your comments.

Mine is a 95 but I think that they are the same. There are 6 bolts for sure and no drilling required. I would call ARB and see if a 97 is not the same as a 95.

I have a 97 with an ARB. 6 bolts. 3 on each side. No drilling.

Mqake sure there is no play in them, as it will keep shifting on you. You may have to drill to make sure the hole in your frame is the same size as your bumper hole.

Greg/James -

Where is the 3rd bolt located? On my set up and the way the factory brush bar was mounted, there was 2 bolts, basically one on top of the other and slighty offset. I did not see any other holes on the ARB that matched any holes on the frame?

Can either of you describe where the other hole is located?

Thanks!

Like you said, there are two that are about on top of one another. The third goes beneath the body/frame mount which is located at the rear most end of the bar(closest to center of truck). I believe that on the Bull bar, one side of the mounting bracket is longer than the other. The hole is located on the longer side.

Thanks James -

I will take a look at that area to see if I can identify the 3rd bolt and post my findings.

What ARB Bar (with winch mount) would you suggest putting on as Disco 2? Is there a way I can get a replacement ARB winch bumper and keep the brush guard I already have?

Greg/James,

Ah Ha, I see the 3rd bolt hole in the back. I missed it because my steering guard plate was covering it up.

Thanks again.
