I'm about to add a second Optima Yellow top to my D1 and the mounting should be easy, but I'm looking for ideas about where to run my cable around the radiator. I'm just wiring them in parallel so I don't need to mount an isolator. Just looking for ideas on clean safe places to thread that fat cable.
thx.

Jack, there really isn't a good way to do this that I can tell. You might pull the radiator and try to stuff the cables back up in there. I ran mine along and behind the radiator and cable-tied them in place. It looks rough, but that second battery has saved me several times. When I improve the setup, I plan to run the cables through a piece of heater hose to provide further abrasion protection.

Jack
with the new battery forward of the location of the former airbox you can carefully run a piece of #1 cable right in fron of the radiator and above the fans/ac condenser through a little slot left in the front radiator seal... Look just forward of the radiator at the top.. I used some fine stranded thhn cable that is "semi Stiff" and it slipped through nicely... Tie the cable up safe and you should be set... The cable should stand the limited heat just fine...

Well with a lot of "convincing" I managed to run the cables in the small corridor infront of the radiator. I had to unbolt the radiator and remove the seal and then some serious force threaded it through the metal brackets inside. I was using 2 gauge cable, so that affected how hard it was but I figure parallel batteries need the easiest flow they can get.

thanks for your help.

if you just wire the second battery in parallel will the alternator charge it??

thanks!

yep.
basically it just makes one really big battery so the charge from the alternator goes to both.

I used the Wrangler Power Products dual battery kit for the Disco1. It came with the battery hold down, cables, solinoid, wiring and isolater switch. I ran my cables back along the drivers fender, around the back of the air box, across the intake hose, in front of the plenum, behind the alternator and over to the original battery. I covered them with that corrugated wiring loom sheathing. I zip tied where needed. It ended up being a clean installation. I will take some photos and put them in my gallery someday.
I didn't want the cables to get pinched and cause a short/melted electrical system, running across the front of the radiator if I was to get in an accident.

I seriously considered the potential problem in case of an accident...But Ford/GM/Dodge all do it in their diesel dual battery trucks so i figured what the heck... Chances are that if i'm in a collision that gets through the bumper winch..etc I'm probably not going to worry about a melted electrical system... The only think that does concern me is a spark... But there are so many other things that will do that...what's one more? Hope i don't ever get to test my theory..
