Do any of you have any thought on octain vs carbon build up on valves. I presently don't have anny problems but hope to keep the wolf from the door by good maintenance etc. I have been running 87 octain in the beast and getting good 16+ mpg but started to think about the carbon build up prob and wondered what everyone thuoght. Thanks Gordon |

The octane rating does not matter. The problem is a defect in the cylinder head design. The problem became a real issue when OBDII required the use of a misfire monitor and it registered the small misfires that some people did not notice before. I have seen all the engine management systems have this problem so you can't single it out by that. What I have noticed is that the older style valve seals let oil by them and i have never had a set of these valves stick. The newer style umbrella seals are the only vehicles that i have seen stick valves. LR is on the fourth try on curing the valve stick problem with different parts but this one seems to be the most promising. |
