My 89 RRC w/BW transfer case is now rear wheel drive. The coupling locked up and I finally have everything to install my LT230, but it has just turned to 2wd. Has the viscous coupling freed itself or have I broken something on my front axle? Is there a way to tell without tearing down the front axle?

With both front wheels off the ground (use jack stands), can you rotate the front driveshaft? If no, will the front wheels turn in the opposite direction,; ie; turn the right wheel forward, does the left turn backwards>? I am assuming you are not running a locker in the front diff!
If yes, well, I guess the viscous coupling could seperate. If the viscous was open, though, the vehicle probably wouldn't move. We have a Hunter Edition in that we are converting to a 230. the vehicle had been flat towed when it was stolen and the mainshaft in the t-case is now round!
Hope this helps!

I put the front up on jack stands. Both wheels off the ground. I can spin each wheel and the other does nothing. I have stock diffs. I then jacked one wheel in the rear and rotated that wheel. It moves the driveshafts both front and rear in the same direction. My front wheels stay stationary. Help

Would'nt it be making some noise? This might be a good excuse to get a Tru Trac.

i have seen cv joints fail to the point that nothing touchs and makes no noise. Try draining the diff and see if metal comes out with the oil.

if you lift both front tires off the ground. spin one the other the other side should spin in reverse, if the other tire doesnt spin there is serious damage somewhere in that front axel.. irregardless of the whole front/rear VC lock up issue.

The passenger side axle shaft twisted apart next to the diff. Fortunately I had a new one I picked up off e-bay several months ago.

Thas the same thing that happened to mine. I drove it like that for about a year cuz I didn't feel like doing anything to it! Bought an axle from Rover Cannibal (now car cannibal)for $100 I think.
