Ok, I searched for a similar thread and couldn't find anything...correct me if I'm wrong.

I noticed after a tropical rain storm down south (over Christmas) that my rear cargo area had some water in it....on the rubber mat, but also on the presents I had stored back there! Hadn't noticed it again, so I thought it just happened when I opened the door.
Until...last night I went to one of those do-it-yourself car wash places to get the road salt off and when I got home I noticed water running down the inside of the rear door and onto the rubber mat.

Is this b/c the door isn't shutting right or perhaps a seal? Obviously it only happens with pressured, heavy water....but I don't want my car wet!

Sus, Could be the seal, latch plate, or hinges or any combination of the above. Check your hinges by opening the door, grab the bottom and lift it straight up. You'll be able to tell if the hinges are worn. As far as the latch plate, check to see it hasn't moved or is loose. Close the door inspect the gap all the way around. If it's off you may be able to suck it in a bit by repositioning the latch. Inspect the rubber seal, it may have cracks or be very hard and brittle.

The leaks come standard on all Discos the only option is where. At least yours is not the sunroof. Good luck and get a rain jacket:)

Funny Matt...thanks! We've been doing so well!!!! (Aside from needing new brakes that is)

Todd, I'll check all the above tonight. Keeping my fingers crossed. If the seal is old, can I buy a new one and have someone install it locally?

Oh, and luckily, I'm yuppie enough that I have Gore-Tex! HAHAHAHA, no actually, I do use mine outdoors....just felt funny washing my Land Rover wearing Gore-tex in the cold last night!
I thought:"Oh my god...I've crossed the line to yuppy-ville!"

alpine windows are known to leak as well. as well as the body seam along the rain gutter. mine came in behind the interior panels and would come out the rear speaker and below the alpine. get a bucket and start watering your truck and wait. might take a little time to start leaking and showing up.

Oh god...this is terrible. I'm pretty certain it's just coming in the top of the door.
But I'll do the test method as well...

Well, they wonder about me anyway. Such a nice looking young girl, drives a nice car, quiet neighborhood, nice dog....then I drive in with my Disco sounding like a Mack truck on a cold day with mud all over it!!!! :) It's great!

Damn, that would certainly have them talking!!!

Funny story: Ivan has been house-sitting for a house on the market and it has just gone under contract. It sits on 20 acres, and we were out in the field Sunday playing 4wd about five minutes before the prospective buyers and realtor pulled up. We kept joking like "wonder if they will notice all the tire tracks and mowed down grass from their newly landscaped lawn to the surrounding field?!" Too fun! They would definitely think we are rednecks! Of course, they pulled up in a brand new Nissan Sports car!!

Ok guys, I checked out the back door last night. No looseness in the hinges, seals look almost brand new and the latch fits tightly. Now, I did note that the gap between the door and the body seems HUGE up top, but I don't have another Disco handy to compare. I'm going to try the 'watering' method this weekend...but can someone show me a pic of the rear door gap?!

there should be enough room in there to stick your finger. gap should be constant though around the entire top. i will snap a pic at lunch if i can remember. getting old.
try watering, wait and sit in truck looking for the leaks.

Sus how old is your disco ? The rubber may look good but if it is not nice and compliant and with a little sage in the hinges you could allow water in. At this point sit back there and have a loved one give you a shower and try to pinpoint the point of entry.

Thanks for the pic Garrett...I actually need the top middle....but mine looks like your so far!

Todd, my truck is a 95. Everything looks good, but we are going to try the watering trick this weekend. My fiance has volunteered to help! :)

I had exactly the same on mine (1993 D1). It came in beneath the gutter where the rear quarter panel meets the side panel. Water seems to capillary in there then through to the inside. Easily fixed with some gaffer (duct to some people) tape & a dab of silicon - but tracking it down was the hard part.

And it rains a lot in the UK!!!!!

yeah i was having a hard time seeing what i was taking a pic of. was damn bright out and the screen was not showing up on the digi camera.
iansoady....that is the same problem i had. silicon took care of it.

Sus, I have 97 and I noticed the same water accumulating in the rear cargo as well. Then my daughter asked me why she could see daylight out the back door on top.
I guess over time, the weight of the wheel hinged on the door and driving off road was too much for the hinges. I took the truck to my dealer and in 30 minutes, he pulled it off and re-fitted the door. Cost me around 40-50 for his time… Worth it versus buying a new hinge and costs of painting and installing.

I could never understand how a British company could make a vehicle that leaks soooo much. Have you ever been to England? All it does is rain!!! God I love Rovers!!!

Matt, I agree!!!! I spent about three weeks in that little country and have been waterlogged ever since!

Bruce, that's a good suggestion. I'm taking her in to my local dealership (not a Rover dealer though) monday for routine oil change and tire rotation and I might ask then...

the door can be adjusted to compensate for the weight on the back of the door. if you took the tire/wheel off the back door it would not shut as well unless you readjusted the hinges.
