My rig got backed up this morning by a neighbor. The headlamp washer nozzle is broken, the bumper cover is cracked (not sure if there's any damage to the bumper), and the fog light plate is out.

I hate to have the bumper repainted, because it would never be the same. I've had cars before that got repainted after an accidence, and rock chips/debris would pick up easily, leaving primer spots all over. I dont know if LR would offer any kind of bodywork, paint job. The local bodyshops are usually cheap and they try to save as much money on paints - so you end up with cheap paint job. Anyone have any experience like mine?

The plastic bumper is no great mystery to fix (I've done 2)any reputable shop could do it. LR and body work, now that is funny. If your metal reinforcement is bent you'll need straighten it out with a porta-power or similar. An alternative is to install a used one (or as mentioned by Phillip). Occaisonally, used from bumpers are posted here...seems like the last I saw was @ $150. Chances are you'll have to color match anyway.

Im not into serious offroading stuff, ARB is not an option right now, plus its not "airbag" tested. Chris, Im gonna have the insurance company take care of this. Thanks though, what color is your bumper? Mine's java black.

If you don't think that painting it is going to be strong enough against rock chips or something, you can always have it powder coated. Its a bit stronger and still gives you the factory look.

D1 or D2

I just took my whole D1 bumper off to make room for RTE.
You could have it real cheap.

JimC,
Powder coating of plastic is in its infancy...experimental at best...I would stay very far away from this. If you want superior protection against stone chips etc...Musky has the answer, 3M Body Schutz. Ted quite awhile back there was someone in California with a Java black front bumper for sale...check the archives. For the right price its always nice to have a spare:)

Thanks Todd for the Schutz explaination.

I spoke to the insurance about replacing an aftermarket bumper.. like ARB or Rovertyme. They said its ok as long as I pay the difference comparing to the cost for repairing it. Looking at those bumpers, there isnt a place to mount the stock fog lights, and the airdam has to be sacrificed. I do light offroad once in awhile, so its not a big deal to have these bumpers installed. But if I do, I'm concerned about later if I have to sell my Disco, would the Rovertyme or ARB bumper become a factor, a plus or minus? I know most people drive Discos like myself dont offroad that much. To this discoweb community is a plus.

Airdamn isn't practical anyway...and you can have more effective lights where they ought to be....

Ted,

Jess Alvarez has what you need posted below in the classifieds. If you work it right you could have the front bumper and brush bar and some extra beer money in hand for the trouble.

You might just find that the replacement aftermarket bumper costs less than the new one from LR...

OK. If you were me, what would you do?

The insurance would write me a check close to $1000. With this money, should I:

1. Get the darn thing fix and get it over with.

2. Who cares about the stock fog lights, airdam. Buy an ARB bumper and replace the whole thing.

Where are you?

If you don't want to go route #2 someone in your area will swap and kick some $$$ back to you.

What year is your truck?

I've got a complete front bumper assembly (except for the headlight washers) for a '95 in good condition. E-mail me if you're interested.

Ted, three reasons to go with number 2

1) If you would've had the ARB or TJM you wouldn't be in this predicament.

2) OEM bumper or Aftermarket, if you take perfect care of your Disco it will depreciate faster than your computer! My '95 Disco is worth less than my 486 !!! LOL

3) Chicks dig em! LOL

If you're into plastic bumpers go to your local topless bar, If you want a REAL bumper go with REAL STEEL!!! Good Luck

Ron, I'm in Sacramento, CA.

Norm, it's a 2001 DII.

Thanks all for your inputs. Looks like everyone so far is routing for 2.

ARB and TJM have similar design and airbag compatible. I dont know how they compare in quality. Havent heard much about TJM, but ARB dont have seem to be in people's favor.. by looking at the Window. Anyone in here have a TJM installed?

Me..I'd do both. Pull your old bumper (straighten the reinforcement first, it's easier to do and you can easily tell when you've pulled it back enough)and put the arb on. Head to your local boating supply place and pick ip some West Systems epoxy fiber glass resin, hardener, filling and fairing (aka majic fu fu dust), and some fiberglass matt. Have fun learn a skill its already busted up. If you want more detail on completing the fix on the plastic let me know.

i've had the TJM on for 4years now. i like it because it doesn't have the crush cans, seems to sit a bit higher and i like the looks better than the ARB.
