I've been talking with Kevin Fell at http://www.kevinsjeepparts.com/ about making a set of his rock sliders for a Disco II. He's agreed to make a free set for someone in the Phoenix area who would be willing to let him use their vehicle as the prototype. Once he's fitted the prototype, then he'd be able to make them for the rest of us in other parts of the country.

His Jeep sliderz are the best on the market. They're reasonably priced, durable, and they fit exceptionally well. I think a LR version would be better than anything on the market today. Check out his RP1 version...its the one I'd like to have on my Disco. You can also take a look at http://www.jeepsunlimited.com to see what the Jeepers think of the product. The people there rave about his sliderz.

Is anyone interested?
Chris

I'd think he'd also be interested in making a set for the Disco 1. I'll pass on your email address.

Nice rocker guards. I really liked the shackle bracket radiator guard. I wonder if he could build one like that for the rovers? Maybe add a winch mount to it. Seriously if he could sell rocker guards for rovers at that price and warrenty them he would get alot of buisness from land rover owners.

Woah woah woah.

I have an 02D2 and would be happy to have him use my truck as a proto. I live in Tempe.

I am totally interested.

In my opinion the finish work on the sliders and bumpers are not that good from the pics on his site, but I have not seen them in person. I would also wonder about the strength of the slider with that long lever coming from the frame all the way out to the slider.

Here are the pics I am talking about the finish.
Rear bumper.

Here are the ones that make me wonder about the strength.

Maybe they will do the job just fine for all I know, but it has to make you wonder what the quality of a product is like if the maker does not pay attention to the small stuff.

The sliders are available powder coated for those that want a nice finish and don't use them on rocks. Most people who use them off road prefer to spray paint them so they can be touched up after scraping them on rocks. No finish is going to be impervious to rocks.

I do agree with you that the rear bumper is ugly. I'm sure it's functional, but it's not something I'd want on my vehicle.

As for the strength of the Jeep sliders, you've got to realize that the version on the website is made for the "uni-frame" of a ZJ/XJ. They attach next to the pinch seam directly under the slider as well as at the end of the mounting arms. They seem to have held up really well on the Jeeps, although the Disco models would probably attach differently.

Anyway, this is all just my opinion of the product. I'm in no way affiliated w/ Kevin. I just know they're the best ZJ slider, and I'd like to have a set made for my Disco2. I don't want to spend $550 for a set of RTE sliders.

For those who have expressed an interest, I've passed your information on to Kevin. If he does make a set of sliders for your Disco, be sure and let us all know how they turn out.

I'll go talk to him and look at his stuff first hand. You have to remember that the pics of the stuff you're looking at are for an entirely different vehicle - not your Rover (like Chris said). He'd have to adapt his design to work on Land Rovers. Chris, did you or Kevin get my email?

Chris,

“The sliders are available powder coated for those that want a nice finish and don't use them on rocks. Most people who use them off road prefer to spray paint them so they can be touched up after scraping them on rocks. No finish is going to be impervious to rocks.”

I was more referring to the finish of the metal, not the paint or powder coat. A little attention to detail and a few extra minutes of work can make all the difference. Look at the second link at the front edge of the slider, and in the third link the grinding and jagged edges of the metal.

“As for the strength of the Jeep sliders, you've got to realize that the version on the website is made for the "uni-frame" of a ZJ/XJ. They attach next to the pinch seam directly under the slider as well as at the end of the mounting arms. They seem to have held up really well on the Jeeps, although the Disco models would probably attach differently.”

Understood, I was simply trying to provide feedback that if he uses the same design for the disco that it may not be strong enough in my opinion.

“Anyway, this is all just my opinion of the product. I'm in no way affiliated w/ Kevin. I just know they're the best ZJ slider, and I'd like to have a set made for my Disco2. I don't want to spend $550 for a set of RTE sliders.”

I agree , I think we need more options and I hope this works out as a quality product at a decent price, god knows we need more option to help drive the price down.

Blue,
See my reply to Chris.

I just got an email back from Kevin and it sounds like he's going to be prototyping a set for Blue's D1. If any of you would like to talk w/ Kevin directly, his email is kevinsjeepparts@cox.net. I'm sure he could answer any questions better than I.

Blue,
Please let us all know what you think after you check out his work, and then again after the finished product is complete.

Nice snag, Blue. Let us know how they work. If Kevin is interested in doing a proto on a D2, have him drop me a line.

I ordered a set of his sliders for my dad's '01 Grand Cherokee. They were nice, but I did have to clean up the welds some before they were coated. Can't really compare them to RoverTym's because the Jeep's mounting is totally different than ours. Let us know how they turn out Blue.

I would rather spend a couple on Dave Lucus's Proto. sliders than those for free. They look 'unfinished' to me.

Not to be a critic but they look like a highschool metal shop project (IMOHO). A bad one at that. This proves the old saying that "you get what you pay for."

I'll go talk to him and look at his stuff first hand.

"you get what you pay for." Reminds me of a story of my ex girlfriend. :)

I will let you know how they work too.
Apparently, Kevin is going to do my D2 after Blue's D1. Blue...when are you going over. I would like to know what you find out .

Thanks, man

We won't get started for a few weeks. Kevin's got backlog, and the Disco & I are on a roadtrip the week of Feb 3. But hopefully I can meet up with him before-hand, within the next week or so. He seems like a real nice guy.

You guys crack me up, nitpicking about "finish" - what are these things called? Rock sliders? Hmmmm...now what does that name imply? Holding wax & a high buff isn't their job. I'm concerned with function - that's Kevins's job...I'll take care of the "looking good" part. LOL

There aren't exactly a whole ton of people making aftermarket stuff for our trucks so when someone new decides to give it a try lets get a look at the actually product before we bash it. The last thing I think we need is a reputation of people who aren't receptive of new accessories. I know we all have our favorites but lets hold off and give Kevin's a chance, there is nothing wrong with some competition to keep the prices down and the innovations coming.

Agreed, Carter. Kevin seems to be on the level, so I intend to give him a chance.

Hey guys:
Kevin here. I'm pretty thick skinned, and take no offense to any of the comments. Heck, you guys don't know the first thing about me, and there's plenty of reason to be wary. America's a great place...there's room for everyone AND their opinions. I know I certainly have opinions on lots of things, lol.

Anyway, I'm happy for the opportunity to offer you guys something new on the market. I'm going to do the best job that I know how and price it fairly based on my overhead, and we'll see what happens. And, that's all I ask in return...wait and see what happens. I've spent under $700 in marketing expense in the last two years (including website hosting and one magazine ad)...and with THAT sort of marketing budget, you can rest assured that I'd be out of business by now if I didn't have a couple of happy customers' word-of-mouth to help out, lol. I take calls early in the morning and late at night to help people out with their Grands (for free) because I like doing what I do. If some of you don't like the finished product, no problem whatsoever...I won't take any offense if you decide not to order.

I'm honored to work with those of you who are willing to work with me, and I'll post every now and again to let you know what's going on with the project.

Until then, Happy Rovering,
Kevin

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with Kevin, sliders are probably my next big mod and right now the only ones that look like they are worth a damn to me are the rovertym ones it would be cool if you are able to provide a second option (no offense John, yours do look awesome and I've said time and time again that your springs are the best mod on my truck as far as doing what they are meant to do. I just feel I am getting a little slighted every-time I essentially have just one option).
