Following on from the thread last year about the actuator lever under the driver's side sill - I have been told by my local LR service manager that in OZ LR recently successfully defended an action based on the LR warranty for a DII with a post-manufacture centre diff lock selector fitted. The drive train failed prematurely within the 3 year warranty. He tells me that the DII was not designed with diff lock in mind and the software for the TCS acts against and inconsistently with the manual engagement of drive front and rear as with diff lock. It can damage the drive train he says. The Defender Extreme has different software that allows the factory fitted diff lock to work with the TCS in that model. He also said that in his opinion diff lock does not really improve the 03.

I recently towed a 21 foot van - over 2000 kilos in weight (a dual axel)with my fully loaded DII v8 manual trans through the soft sand on a nearby island - the tcs worked beautifully and I was getting through places where lesser four wheel drive vehicles with loads only in the vehicle were failing - its a matter of learning how to drive it - not letting it take over completely. Interesting hey.

Nope... I have used it with both... without a doubt, CDL with ETC (TCS) works MUCH better. In some situations even just CDL and NO ETC will work better while in others ETC will get you where the CDL alone could not. I've learned to use the ETC in the two or so years before fitting the CDL so I know how to use it. And there is no way I'll buy the idea that ETC works better than CDL or even that the CDL will cause problems unless you use it in a way that a CDL was never made to be used.

Sorry if I sound a tad harsh but whenever I hear this kinda BS I think of why Land Rover is going down this dismal path to soft utes. I will never buy another Land Rover without a CDL again. Just as I will never buy a IFS/IRS rover.

Hate to say it but the 2005 diso and defender is going to be all independent via the rumor mill at LRNA.

G-Wagen or old D90 will be my next vehicle. As much as I love Land Rovers I'm not going to buy one with IFS and no CDL just because it's a Rover.

In '07 I am slated to move to Albequerque, NM. I think that will be the year for me to acquire a D-90.

For me, F-350 Super Duty, thats the only way for me. I love LR but the road they are going downing is not good. Sure the 350 will be big for some trails.

F350 big for SOME trails?! Where to you live? My D2 just manages in a few trails I run as it is. :)

- the 03 has it all - you can order it with the CDL. Still has beam axle.

PS I have a 95 D1 v8 auto. It is good, but not as able as to the D11 on identical runs - especially when cross axled or in the soft sand.

Yea, yea, yea. Keep rubbing it in that you have diff lock in the 03 disco and we don't.
P.S. is a Land Rover seen as a status symbol in the land of oz or is that just here in the U.S.

My opinion:
ETC= ok performance on level ground in basic slippery conditions like snow, sand and mud all of moderate depth.
ETC= sucks when you start to get vertical, or the stuff gets deep, or both, or throw in rocks, roots, trees, etc. With ETC you suffer a big loss of momentum and then traction. You'd better have a winch. Maybe I just haven't figured it out?

The Aussie dealer's comment that the DII was not designed for a CDL and that the drivetrain would suffer damage does not even bear consideration. Since LR now offers a CDL-equipped 2003 model in other countries (INCLUDING OZ), but not here, that tells me straight out that it is nothing but a marketing decision. And that sucks.
