Just re-watching this great film on IFC tonight.

It struck me that I regard all their (mis)adventures with that old Series as entirely reasonable... Thinking, yeah, that's what I would do with no brakes, etc!!!

HAHAHA, I caught some of it on IFC on Monday. Great old movie. I need to see it start to finish again, it's been years. I have a different slant on it since I got a Rover.

strong enough tree; light vehicle; good winch mounting points; proper frame of mind - why not!

of course Camile you would need a Series LR to really make it happen.

LOL...thanks Pugsly! Now I'm probably going to rent this weekend. It's been a long time since I've seen that movie.

Karen,
The people you see in that movie are real Bushman. That was South Africa's claim to fame, "The God's must be crazy"
The movie was shot on three different locations, all very familiar to me.
Very cool movie....

I love the scenes where he keeps the Rover rolling, jumping out and opening the gates to let the Rover roll through then closing the gate behind and jumping back in again, all with the Rover still moving forward!

Camille, yes, entirely possible. In fact Warn, back when you were just a gleam in your dad's eye, had an advert for the 8274 winch with a CJ5 dangling from a large tree. What *was* interesting in the movie is that the winch stalled before burning up the motor ;-)

After The Gods Must be Crazy made the rounds of the theaters in VT, coworkers chirstened my Lightweight the Antichirst. Both because it was a Rover, and because VT issued me tags that said 6A666 (I wonder if it was some DOT worker's idea of a joke?)

For years I drove a series IIA with no brakes all over our land in the mountains of VA, so I can really appreciate the "fun" that was had in the movie. Mine also had no second gear, and for awhile, no gear shift lever. ahhhh..the good old days.

Well, in order to try this, Id have to get a winch first. Sounds like it could be fun, although I'm sure I would never find a tree or anything that could support 5000lbs (and I'm not willing to find out the hard way either lol) :)

I've got it on tape, watched it on New Years, actually... :)

Hey Willie,
Does anyone in your neck of the woods know the whereabouts of the Antichrist? It's be quite a conversation piece....

Leslie,

Good idea, let me see what we can find out about it, would that not be a great piece of art to have. I know some one who might just know...

Cheers
Willie
BTW I now live in Vancouver Canada.

Hi,

Vancouver is a cool 8 degrees celcius today.

Have not found the Landy yet but did manage to find this recent (November 2000) article in a Namibian news paper about the Bushman. I am going to try and find him myself as he is in the same area I use as a regular stop on my Safaris....

FYI "N$ refered to in the article is about US$0.11"

Movie star still lives the simple, quiet life in east

THOUSANDS of inhabitants of the former Bushmanland still regard G/aqo Coma, who shot to fame on the local and international scenes after he featured in the feature film The Gods Must Be Crazy, as a positive role model.
He also featured in the sequels The Gods Must Be Crazy II, which like the first movie was shot in both Namibia and South Africa before independence, and The Gods Must Be Crazy III.
Acting has taken Coma to Japan and Hong Kong, among other countries, and he describes his first flying experience on a chartered flight as the most mind-boggling and exhilarating thing that ever happened to him.
Despite the worldwide exposure Coma does not suffer from culture shock and still lives according to his own simple time-honoured traditions.
At the time he was discovered by South African film director Jamie Uys in the 1980s Coma had seen only three white people in his life and he had never seen a brick house or a settlement larger than San villages.
The aging actor, whose is estimated to be 56 years old but who could be older than that, was interviewed by The Namibian recently after being traced to Mangetti Hospital in the Otjozondjupa Region where he is recuperating from a bout of tuberculosis.
At the height of his fame about a decade ago he was given a golden handshake of at least N$150 000 by Mimosa Films for his roles.
Though the illiterate actor was apparently cheated of a large amount of money by many hangers-on he managed to invest part of the proceeds.
The actor, who chuckled and laughed during the interview as he recalled the 'good old days', built a brick house worth around N$80 000, which he furnished with furniture bought on a cash basis.
While basking in his newly-acquired wealth Coma also spent N$15 000 on a second-hand Chevrolet and enlisted the services of a driver whom he paid a monthly wage of N$150 to drive him around, as he does not know how to drive.
He also tried his hand at stock farming and procured 15 cattle that he bought for N$600 each and 15 goats which at that time cost him N$50 each.
Whenever his herd increased in number the actor sold some of them for beef as he was afraid that he was going to lose count as he is only able to count from one to 20."
"I just wanted to have 10 cattle so that I can know if any of my livestock is missing and that way it is easy to count them," he said.
At least eight of his cattle have since been devoured by lions in the game-rich area.
Later he sold his vehicle for N$15 000 and he says the money has been invested in the bank as a security for the future.
Before he was given the N$150 000 golden handshake the actor was once paid an amount of N$3 000 in the 1980s but he does not know what happened to the money.
At that time there was speculation that the notes were blown away by the wind or the "hyenas ate them" as the money was apparently left in the open because Coma at that time did not know the significance of money, particularly paper notes.
At one stage he was showered with a wide variety of goods worth thousands of dollars but when these goods where transported to his village they just perished as they were left outside exposing them to various weather elements.coma has only watched his movies at events sponsored by the movie house that created the films.
He was given complementary copies of his movies but he sold one of the video tapes for N$50 to a Policeman based in that area.
When his bank account was still loaded with cash impoverished relatives in groups of three, five and 10 descended on his house like vultures and squatted in his house.
He still receives an amount of around N$2 000 in royalties every month that he uses to support several of the children he sired from two marriages.
Both marriages ended tragically as Coma has lost two of his wives.
He also supports a number of grandchildren.
He still has seven cattle and he owns a small piece of land where he plants maize, pumpkins and beans at Gamsa Village.
His bank account is being administered by Pastor Peet Poggenpoel who said the decision to pay Coma monthly royalties was made about four years ago.
Initially he used to receive monthly payments of N$350.
The pastor at the Dutch Reformed Church said provision was also made to save some money for the actor's children, one of his wives and for his old age.coma says he is still willing to act if he is given any film role and he says he misses the silver screen terribly.
