Is that why you dont get both and in Australia we do?

Scott

PS. As Austin Powers would say, this should be good for shits and giggles.

Well, that must be someone's view in either Land Rover, Ford, or some U.S. Government Regulations office. And we're aweful sore about it too.

I won't ever buy a new Rover because of it.
(You hear that Ford?)

alice springs? i'm from west texas, and we call anyone from another part of the state a yankee, hahahaha. just kidding. always good to see other people on this board from God's country. of course, my fiance swears that God's country is california, where she's from. poor misguided soul. speaking of australia, that's where i want to go for our honeymoon. she wants to go to jamaica. any thoughts from people who've been to one or both? and keeping with the spirit of the thread, hell, i don't even think i can be trusted with my disco, much less cdl and etc. ;)

If you're headed to Sidney, I recommend popping over to King's Cross for an evening. A very sleepy, quaint little burb that's extremely conservative, but you may find some interesting things to do.

Right Scott?

I agree with Jim - there are some really nice Bed and Breakfasts (B&B's). The night life is bit slow though. The area is well recognised for its colourful flags. It is customery to ask for a price list at most of the B and B's before taking a room. Almost all B & B's accept Amex, Diners and Visa.

Cheers

A

PS - If you decide on Melbourne, make sure you stay at St Kilda. There you will find a terrific resident band called "Adolf and Switch Blades" - a satirical and introspective band with moderate admission fees.

hey scott...yeah...7/01 build date on my dII and no cdl...oh well. maybe one day i will drop back in on OZ and buy a cdl t-case in the duty free shop!

hey kevin...you actually want to leave texas for any reason? wow...! ;) just kidding...i was in australia between 1972 and 1974, so i was pretty young (10 when we left). i have had many beers and OZ (i am sure) has changed a lot, but palm valley seemed cool when we were there. it is in the northern territory.

is it still worth seeing scott?

You should have stopped at Mount Isa - the food is surprisingly good - freah seafood flown in from the Gulf; who would have thought given that it is in the middle of bloody nowhere!

being a kid, my travel advice was poorly followed...;) in '73, it did not make my folks stopover list! my dad was a civilian contractor at pine ridge downloading station outside alice springs. so the u.s. gov would pay for the civilians vacations. generally, people would just call the base's travel agency and they would book an entire trip for you...only having two years there, we took the "see as much as possible" trips...!

Mike - What was downloaded?

michael burt (Mikeyb)
Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 07:44 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

it was a satellite download station. i don't know if it is still there or in operation. it was a u.s. military project and i am sure you know about the situation in southeast asia in the early 70's...enough said?

i hope so...;) because my dad was given a security clearance and told not to talk. and he never has.

it became quite a thorn between the u.s and australia because of the secrecy, so it may be gone now.

Ahh - I know what you mean - the over horizon radar at near Tindall air base.

Kevin,
Palm Springs is a great 4wd destination near Alice Springs in Central Australia, there is also plenty of other great areas to visit not too far away also, Kings Canyon, Ayers Rock etc.
But for my money I'd hire a 4wd in Darwin and head over to the Gibb River Rd in the Kimberleys. Its 800 km's of bone jarring dirt corrugations from Kununurra to Derby near Broome. Plenty of top spots along here, I just spent 8 months last year flying around the Kimberleys and I was impressed.
Both of these locations are at there best in the middle of the year for both climate and access, but will be flat out with tourists.
If you like I would be happy to grab some info on the Northern Territory and Kimberley region, just send an email.
Mikey, Pine Gap is still top secret and operational in Alice Springs. It plays a vital role to U.S.military.

thanks, greg. i'll check those sites out. i'm having to use my powers of persuasion to pull this off. she really wants to go to jamaica. of course, if she doesn't get out of the pissy mood she's been in lately, i'll be taking my disco on a honeymoon instead, lol.

scott - should i make it, i'll look those sites up. you can't go wrong with a band called adolf and switchblades, i'm sure.

hey, mike, so where are you now? i was 10 yrs old when you were in australia too, but i've never even been out of the country (unless you count going to mexico to party).

hey greg...i have a book of the NT printed in (and purchased in) australia of pine gap...(i stand corrected on the name!) with a picture of the facility...there was a ridge that overlooked the site that now reminds me of area 51, as the security staff would come up and run you off if you ever sat up there too long! it was hard to get to, but by motorcycle, it could be done!

hey kevin...i am in dallas...born here, raised here, lived in alice springs, new olreans, and norfolk, va...but now here again. it is hard to leave this state for long! what part of west texas are you in? i was supposed to be in el paso for some climbing at hueco tanks next weekend, but it will not happen after all...CRAP!

hey, mike. i am in san angelo now. i moved here after 10 years in new braunfels and a couple of years in dallas myself. my 4-wheelin' is restricted mostly to deer leases and ranches. i want to get a lift kit next so i can take it to another level, but this is still my primary mode of transportation, and the darn thing barely clears my garage as it is. :)

i hear you, kevin...

i modified the garage to get my DII inside...i have the lrna full lenght rack on mine and i had to chop the trim panels to clear...finally, i sectioned the rack...i never used the top "rim" portion of the rack. i attach my bike and kayak (thule) stuff to the "floor" level of the rack. i cut the top part at the "floor" level and then drilled it to allow me to bolt it back on if needed. that way i recouped 4" inches! so i have some of greg davis' 1" spacers and i will probably get some OME 1.5" springs...plus another inch in tires...good thing i found another 4 inches! they sure go fast!
