I have a 2000 discoii and need to decide whether tobuy it in at end of lease for $23ooo with 55000 miles or pay rover $2500 for mileage and then lease a 2003. Old car has been reliable no major problems.

Keep the old, epecially if you do any offroading. You can modify the old one how ever you want. Then again, I have a 1996 D1 and a 1969 IIA so I guess I like the old

Personally, I would never lease a car. Ok..won't say never, but I can't think of any reason I would ever lease a car. I've never heard of a lease where you come out ahead of the game compared to buying.

Well, you will loose your CDL potential with a 2003, if that is a reason for you..............

Keep the 2000

I leased my '01 DII, because if it was a major POS, I would hand LR the keys at the end and be done with it. I figured if I own it, I'm gonna get screwed when I try to trade. If it's good, I'll drive it till the wheels fall off, and usually by 40K or so you know if it's good or a lemon. Since yours has been good, and it has the potential to add CDL, I would probably buy it. I don't see enough difference in the '03 to change -the 4.6 is just slightly better than the 4.0 IMHO, and no potential for CDL. Compare your buy-out price to the price of used Disco's on the lot, or in the paper and see how it compares.

If you keep it I would buy a aftermarket warranty plan for the vehicle if you do not work on it yourself. See if the dealer will add the LR aftermarket warranty which is thru APCO. I would go with this because they cover valve jobs, product upgrades, and other LR oddities which many other companies do not cover. APCO being connected to LR seems to cover more items than some other plans.
This statement only holds true if you haven't modified the vehicle. Many insurance companies will not cover things on a modified vehicle so be sure read the fine print and get any "of course" in ink.

I have the 03...do yourself a favor...the 4.6 is night and day compared to the 4.0. Has some cajones, like a truck should....plus it is smooth and really quiet.

Why not just buy an 03? Leases usually make sense if it's a company car (can expense imediately as you go, and don't have to recapture depreciation if you sell it)
But those factors don't apply to a personal car.
What's the value of a like equipped like mileage 2000 disco on the used market right now...If you can buy a like vehicle for $20,500 or less then why would you pay LR more to keep yours?

Same goes for an 03....what's the all inclusive total costs for the term of the lease? and what's the buyout amt at the end?

Is that more or less than what you could buy an 03 outright for?
Since every damn thing is covered under warranty for 4 years, including trip interuption expenses there aint no surprise costs of ownership.

Do the math...interest rates are so low right now it's hard to fathom not owning a car, unless you own a company and use it mostly for work.

The money battle is a long term war...

Gee, $23K for a 2000 with 55K miles, seems kind of steep, unless its an SE with a bunch of toys/options. My 2002 SD (on lease) will only cost my $18K at the end (39 mo, 10K mi/year). I agree with the comments about keeping it if you go off-road and want CDL. Esp. if it's been good so far. I'm leasing mine for the same reason one of the other posters commented about. I didn't have enough confidence in the reliability to buy it out right, nor did I want to have $600/mo payments. The $400/mo lease payment is easier on the budget, and I don't care so much if it's a little more expensive in the long run. Either way a $35,000 vehicle is expensive.

So let me get this straight.....

When the warranty runs out on my modified Pig in less than 20K, I should not buy the Extended warranty?

I think the 2000 may warrant some extra cost over another used vehicle simply because it is yours and you know how it has been treated or serviced. Buying a used car can be a real treat if it was driven by a mall crawler who thinks the pretty orange light is on because you have plenty of oil.................................

Paul D., plenty of discussions in the past regarding extended warranties. Some positive, most negaitve. A really good E.W. will cost you plenty, less expensive ones will eat your shorts with this and that policy exclusions and are really only worth it for expensive large items.
Tough call to make. Read the messages before you decide, then research further still.
Good luck
