Oh Boy, you had to open up that can of worms....

The French, flipping their wine sipping, pea soup eating noses at us and holding hands with the Germans. How fucking lovely! It's amazing how everyone forgets that we (US) sacrificed thousands of lives to kick Hitler's ass in WWII, so the French can remain to live free and be rude to the rest of the world. Now they are holding hands with the Germans, stating that they will not allow NATO to play with the bad American Cowboys. Damn French!

What's IRAQ got for you France? HUH? I have been to IRAQ, it's not exactly vacation land for you. Or are you tired of your beautiful cities and coasts. Maybe you don't need oil. Then quit buying and driving cars and give your share of the World's oil supply to Venezuala. You all could ride your bicycles with the weaved baskets and talk about us bad Americans and our SUV's. WHOOPS! I forgot that Bicycles are a sore subject with you right now.....Yeah, that's right, an American from Texas keeps coming over to your country every July to kick your asses in the Tour De France. Yeah, you know who he is; LANCE ARMSTRONG!!! Hmmmm was is it now, four years running? Damn French!

So you want peace and happiness and the freedom to hold hands with Germans. BFD. Nobody gave a shit when your military raided that Green Peace boat in international waters a few years ago. But then again, an American High School Varsity Football team could have done the same thing. Damn French!

Okay, I am off to drink more coffee.

Well....

I was going to point out that the French DO have the French Foreign Legion, but.... considering probably 3/4s of them are from elsewhere hiding out from the law of their native countries....

Paul,
I had an officer once point out a really interesting distinction...

"The Marines are the best killers in the world. They're professional, just doing their job. The French Foreign Legion, they're the best murderers in the world... it's not a job, they just love doing it."

FWIW...

Yes, I agree: history repeats itself. I'll give you an example: Today we know, that the Nazis set the Reichstag on Fire in order to install a dictatorship. Now read the following and find the parallels yourself:

On February 27, 1933 the Berlin Reichstag, the seat of Germany’s parliament, was set on fire. Shortly after the fire began, the Dutch left-wing radical Marinus van der Lubbe was arrested at the scene of the crime, apparently as the sole culprit.

Even before his identity was established, the Nazi leaders accused the German Communist Party (KPD) of having committed arson. According to Nazi propaganda, the Reichstag fire was intended as a signal for a communist uprising that had long been planned—a claim for which there was not a shred of evidence. In actual fact, the KPD leadership was neither willing nor able to organize such an uprising, so the Reichstag fire could not have been a signal for it.

For the Nazis, who had been in power less than a month, since January 30, 1933, the Reichstag fire was the excuse for a hitherto unparalleled persecution of Communist and Social Democratic workers, intellectuals and party leaders. On February 28, 1933 alone, just one day after the fire, thousands of persons active in, or allied with, the workers movement were arrested. The first to be arrested also included writers Egon Erwin Kisch, Ludwig Renn and Carl von Ossietzky, later murdered by the Nazis in a concentration camp.

All left-wing newspapers, including the Social Democratic daily Vorwärts, the Communist Party press and the German Trotskyists’ newspaper Permanente Revolution, were confiscated and banned.

Two decrees put into effect only one day later, the “Decree on the Protection of People and State”, subtitled “against communist acts of violence endangering the state,” and the “Decree Against Treason of the German People and High-Treason Activities,” were used to annul practically overnight the essential basic rights incorporated in the constitution of the Weimar Republic. These so-called “fire decrees” stayed in effect until the end of the Third Reich and formed the pseudo-legal basis for the entire Nazi dictatorship.

I don't buy it. What does it matter as long as everyone keeps paying their taxes? There's no need to repress so-called 'freedoms'. It's all about economic stability and control. There's no reason to get so worked up about the French, it's typcial posturing before the 11th hour round of negotiations right before we go in there and take over. Just look at the public banter from Powell et al. Lines have been drawn, they have to know we're serious. Fine, France, what is it you want out of the deal? Is that all? Okay, you're in. Russia, you're next. China, go ahead and keep supporting N Korea's slave labor camps, we'll keep feeding them if you keep em out of the south. Come on people, open your eyes!!

Money is power and we have lots and they all know it and we can afford it. This is the cost of freedom.

Ahh yes, the ole Bush is Hitler bit eh Jens?. That's getting pretty old. Everyone using it just keeps forgetting the whole mass genocide bit.

If you truly believe 9/11 was our doing in order to spark an imperialist takeover of the world, I'm sorry you have some severe mental issues.

And while you're out there admiring communism you might contemplate that there is a system of government FAR more likely to engage in an action of that sort. Lest we forget Stalin made Hitler look like a simple street thug.

It was the first english text I got from a google search on "Reichstagsbrand". Quoting a socialist site doesn't necessarily mean I'm a communist. And no, I'll never forget the genocide that germans and their supporters commited. And I would never say that an american president that got elected by a majority is like Hitler...

But that war has been planned long before 9/11:

My personal view is that Hussein should have been taken out 12 years ago. But, we let peaceful sanctions have a go at it. With the current state of affairs in the world Hussein presents a real threat to our homeland (Hussein hates US, terrorists hate US, Hussein finds common cause with terrorists and supports them <--some people find this to be a stretch I do not). As such, having given peace a chance it's time to take him out.

"And I would never say that an american president that got elected by a majority is like Hitler... "

You put that quote up and asked people to find the parallels, the most blaringly obvious one being between Bush and Hitler, so yes I think you would make that inference. If my interpretation of your intent is off, please enlighten me.

I just find it quite remarkable that there has been no investigation that deserves the designation about what really happened and what went wrong, compared to the Lewinsky affair for example. There are a lot of unanswered questions in this case.
Again, I DONT say Bush = Hitler. That would be stupid. But the first question always has to be: "Cui bono?". And this DOESN'T mean that US Secret Agencies planned and executed the 9/11 Attack. But maybe they knew a fraction more than nothing about it?

And let me get one thing clear: it's not Antiamericanism in Europe, it's a severe problem with the Bush Administration. Many germans have friends or relatives in the States and won't forget the sacrifices your nation gave in the 40's to liberate us from the nazis. But friends should be able to keep up their friendship, even if they have diffrent opinions on certain matters. Otherwise, it's not worth calling it friendship.

Jens,

I for one, am a very embarrassed American in regards to the Lewinsky thing. The President of the United States, Bill Clinton, lied under oath and lied to the world. A lot of people have a hard time with the Bush administration because he is blunt when speaking. Personally, I like it; but others do not share that same opinion.

Jens,

What "problems" do europeans have with the Bush administration?(yourself included) This information would be helpful in knowing what position you hold. I know there was all this hoopla over the Kyoto Treaty because Bush rightfully rufused to sign it, and I belive no other country in Europe signed it either. So, what was up with the demonstrations and general rude welcome from our "friends"? I don't see European leaders and diplomats treated this way in the U.S. . Is the fact that Bush isn't a Socialist cause Europeans to dislike him?

Jens,

I agree 100% about being friends while having differing opinions. I'm of the opinion Saddam needs to go away, one way or another, permanently. I highly doubt that our intelligence community (castrated as it was after 8 years under Clinton) had any credible evidence which would have prevented 9/11.
I'm also 100% with Paul in agreeing that Bill Clinton is one of the biggest embarassments ever to afflict this country. I have absolutely zero respect for the man.
Bush is very much like Reagan. He's a straight shooter. He knows what he wants to accomplish and isn't afraid to go after it. In short he's a leader. Far too few politicians are these days. Most have opinions which swing with the polls on a daily basis (Al Gore....how many incarnations of him have we seen?) Many people have a hard time dealing with men like Reagan and Bush because they are not willing to sacrifice their principles. I can, however, understand how this may frighten people who have contrary opinions and question his motives. That said, I can assure you the United States is not out to take over the world. Make no mistake about it, we are going to look out for ourselves. If this means we invade Iraq without the support of certain European allies so be it. We're under the gun, Russia, Germany and France are not.

I think Russia is worried about Saddam being ousted due to $$$. Every other week in the Wall St. Journal or Aviation Week & Space Technology there is an article or two about the fledgling aerospace / military weapons industries in Russia. They need cash for R&D and for the overall economy.

As far as the 'attitude' from the Euros goes....Last October I spent a week in England, in the town of Poole. At several of the Pubs, I met folks who thought of me as another American Cowboy as soon as they heard my 'lack' of accent. In Fact, one chick yelled at me stating that America destroyed the English language and that we are trying to take over the planet. All I was trying to was order another scotch. I know that example may not speak for the whole country, but none the less, it was an interesting experience.

Russia is certainly worried about the $$$, and that is also the prime concern of France. Saddam owes them several billion dollars as well, and their economy isn't in much better shape than Russia's.

I hear ya Chris.....

I made some comment to the lady and my friends knew that I was about to verbally assault her and stepped in.

Another interesting tidbit regards Saddam's son and his political statements on Iraqi Tv. He gets so lippy that Saddam even has to shut down the broadcasts. Saddam jr made a comment a few days ago about us attacking Iraq. He stated some jibberish about how 9/11 will not compare to the future attacks. This American cowboy want to unleash the fury of the B-2 as soon as I saw that.

I do not know who in his/ her right mind would say such thing as France's economy isn't in much better shape than Russia's?

I suggest that they come to NY ands talk to some of the Wall Street boys about where they have put some of their money lately; hence the stupidly high Euro.

As for the english woman in that Poole pub, I do apologise on behalf of my fellow europeans for such bad manners and can only hope that she was drunk.

Landy,

No the French economy isn't floundering like the Russian, it is not exactly the epitomy of health though. Hence my statement that it was not "in much better shape than" implying that to a degree it was indeed in better shape. Furthermore, I never made any claim to actually being in my right mind....although I am left handed, so I'm probably right brain dominant.
