I bought my DII from a non-dealer. He said the oil change was done at Rover which I thought meant him but now I don't think they even bothered since the car only had 6K on it. I should have (hindsight is 20/20) What kind of damage could be done if the oil wasn't changed until 10K? As homer simpson says "Dohhhhhhh"

Is there still oil on the dipstick? What's it look like (probably pretty dark)? If it's the first 10k on the engine, there may be some little metal flecks in the oil. I say change it and forget about it. Maybe you shortened the overall life of the engine in the same way you can shorten your life with coffee & cigarettes, but you'd know by now if the engine was allowed to run dry.

What did the oil look like when you changed it?

I wouldn't get too hysterical, probably okay - maybe put a can of cleaner in before you change it next time?

What type of cleaner would you recommend?

The truck now has 40K on it and I have changed the oil religiously-every 3K - no noticable problems. Thanks.

Just something that will loosen up the varnish and sludge (suspend it in the oil) so that it will drain out when you change the oil. There are a number of products out there on the shelf - you pour it in, run the engine for the specified period of time, and then do the oil change as usual.

I would NOT use a cleaner. I would also pretend that your (possible) missed oil change(s) never happened, as far as any future warranty work is concerned. If you ran your oil long for the first 10k, I wouldn't think you'd have buildup (others, please correct me if I'm wrong here). I'd be more worried about metal shavings from that new engine getting recirculated, but there's nothing you can do about that now. Hell, you could probably drain the oil in this engine and run for a few thousand miles with no immediate ill effects...
