I just got my truck back from the dealership. The check engine light was on, so I had them look at it. Lucky for me "Oprah", that's what I call her, is still under warranty until April. But I needed new windshield wipers, so i figure while she is here. 73 frinkin dollars for all three plus labor!!!!!!! I won't do that again. Plus they lecutured me about not having had my 30K maintenance yet. Oh well live and learn. Plus they kept her for 2 1/2 days. I was going through withdrawls. I was having to drive my wife's Volvo, I felt like I was driving on the ground. Anyway, I just wanted to vent.

Okay, I just have to say "that sucks". Did they put special wiper grease on? Now if they installed the red double wipers with the wings I entirely understand. :)

You should call them out! Which dealership? Make sure your brothers are not screwed in the future.

2 1/2 days was because of the check engine light, apparently it was having random misfires, caused by exhaust valves sticking. But I figured what the hell, I need new blades. They also called me the next day to tell me my serpintine belt needed to be replaced. I had been told this before so I said "Okay". So the cost brake down was like this:

RH and LH wiper $17.66 each
Rear wiper $23.80
Labor $17.26
New Belt $41.33
Labor $60.72
Misc Materials (what the FU@*is that) $11.70

Grand Total $198.17

The good news is that at least they cleaned her nice and shiney. The Dealer is Tom Williams here in Birmingham. The "golden" wiper blades are the only real problem I have had with them though.

but what did they do about the random misfires?

"you need bypass sugery...let me clip your nails...$198.17"

???

They removed the heads and replaced the valves. But all that was free, thanks to Land Rover warranty.

well, given the valve job, $200 ain't bad, but $0 to the dealer and $25 to the local auto parts store would have been better.

The sweet thing here is that they charged $60.72 for an item they had to remove to do the valve job anyway. I would go back to the dealer and call them out on that one. You actually got charged for labor that was included in removing and replacing the heads.
P.S. most dealers don't charge to put wipers on either, it only takes about 2 min if the vehicle is already in the shop
You got screwed

I am shocked ...and appauled...you mean to tell me that you hadn't done your 30k maintenance yet...and they did a valve job for free......clearly the cause for your needing new valves was the lack of the 30k maintenance. Have no fear, when you do bring it in for the 30k maintenance...be sure to put some SPF 50 around your sphincter as well.

Yeah, I've heard too many horror stories about LRNA dealerships. I wish someone would jerk a knot in LRNA's tail. The company as a whole seems to have a propensity for being a little (OK, maybe VERY in some cases) "snobbish".

A little snobbish, the dealer here in Birmingham, also sells Porsche, Audi, Cadillac. So my Disco is probably the second cheapest vehicle on the lot next to the FL. As for the 30K maintenance it is not a warranty breaker. Thank goodness. I just never have an extra $800.00 laying around to pay for 30K maintenance.

I'm running a special on wiper blades to day only! $15 each and I'll look at your engine and tell you it's a V8...
I dunno i think most dealers/manufacturers expect to ream their customers to a point. Case in point I had an F250 that losy a valve guide at 35500 miles the dealer replaced/rebuilt the top end for free.. Doing this work they had to remove the AC components. 450 miles later the AC failed... I called them up and told them about it and that i thought it was because dirt and crud had gotten into the AC during the top end overhaul.. It's 60 miles to the dealer.. Now the truck has 36010 miles OUT OF WARRANTY! Do you think I threw a fit.. The dealer was pissed cause i told them it was their crappy workmanship that caused the problem in the first place..Plus i had a non stock Banks Sidewinder turbo on it... One call to the SEMA advocate who called the Ford Customer advocate and it was solved... But i still had to pay 12.75 in Misc charges... They figured i wouldn't flinch and just take it up the ass.. How many people just do take it..?

You guys need to move to Texas. I live over 300 miles from the nearest LR dealer. When my 99 Dll "needed" the valve job at 30k miles, I bitched because they had first said to just run fuel injecter cleaner to fix the check engine light. After some discusion, the service manager sent a loaner (a FL) 200 miles, we swapped vehicles and then swapped again 3 days latter. I also had them do the 30k service ($400). While 100 mile trip may sound bad, believe me, it beats the hell out of a 300 mile trip :)

$400 for the 30k maintenance seems better than the $800 I was quoted for my D1. I can't believe they told you to put fuel injection cleaner in. I read in the owners manual that if you put any additives in the fuel tank it would void the warranty.

LR now adds aditives to the tank during the services at the dealer. They are attempting to push the valve issue out of warranty so they don't have to pay for it. That the ford fix.

Hey Michael that 11.70 was so they could charge you to throw away any used parts. Everytime I go to the dealer I ask them for my parts so I can just chuck them into the garbage at home. Damn dealers.

Gotta do your own maintenence chaps...read my bitchin' tale about not closing out a warranty service ticket on ABS brakes further down the board...oh...and they clearly do not know what causes the ABS/TC lights to come on in the 1st place...now it's time to play " Name that Dealer"...yes it was Land Rover Bedford Hills, New York...and don't expect a call back from their Service Manager 'cos he won't return calls....the irony, and the ultimate piss take is that they have the Jag franchise here too...and I WONT be buying an X type from them...tough shit! Oh...and they 'kept' my car off the road for a week...AND they said I' refused the work...what work, they didn't do any....unbelieveably incompetent and totally disorganised!!!

Hey there - I've got a bridge in Brooklyn you need to look at..it's priced to sell!
If you go to Pep Boys or Discount Auto Parts or any auto parts supply house you can but a set of wiper bladerefills for $6-8(they have little computers at point of purchase that tell you what size to buy)...it takes all of 10 minutes to change them.

I know they would be cheaper if I replaced them myself, but I figured what the hell, while I'm having this other stuff done, I might as well have this done too. I just figured that would cost less. That's why the thread is named "I have learned my lesson". How much for the bridge? I might want to trade for some prime swampland I have in Florida, I got robbed on that too. =)

After a quote for $145 for rear brake pads, I declined. With an independent mechanic in the family was able to get the pads at cost for $24 (for the entire set) and after changing them out gave serious thought to going into automotive repair for a living. $145 to do what took me 15 minutes and $24???? I'm in the wrong business.
