I took my ['96 Disco] hub apart tonight expecting to find an exploded CV joint because of the horrible noise it was making. I slid the outer axle out surpised to see the inner one come with it. All the bearings appear intact including the CV joint itself. I know I have a few seals leaking and had a little water in the housing (milky) but did not have any damage on the axles. After wiping out the oil-grease I soon saw that the outer axle (biggest part around CV) had been rubbing the bottom of the swivel pin housing. It had ground down a large area all around the hole for the bottom swivel pin, probably 1/8" in the worst area. What would cause the axles to sit so low in the housing? It must be something simple yet I cannot find anything wrong that would cause the problem. I have not taken the housing off yet or inspected inside the axle tube itself (simply slid the axles out and stuffed a rag in the axle tube to keep the gear oil from pouring into the housing.) I'll post pictures tomorrow to help everyone visually. And yes, I have possibly read every available page on the internet that involves the D90 or Disco axles, cv-joint, or swivel pin housing yet still nothing that involves my problem or how to fix it short of replacing the entire thing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jason T. Barker speedminded.com |

Jason There is a Needle bearing in the spindle/stub axle that locates the CV in the swivel ball... Is it there? |

Blake, I'm going to compile all my pictures on one page and attempt some kind of organization...with a little information about what you're looking at. I would suggest picking up a manual (bought mine directly from Haynes and shipped from the UK for about $20 US) I can scan the corresponding pages for the project too. I want the Bentley manual but haven't found it under $100. Keith, Yes, as you can see the needle bearings are there. I decided to research a little more and sleep on it and look at it today and now I believe I know what the problem is...I'll have more info on it later.

It wouldnt be that the swivel ball bearings have worn to the point of allowing the entire CV to drop in the ball? I see you have the ABS CV with teeth gears, they are doing the damage? Interestingly there is an area on the ball which has been machined down, it looks very similar to your picture. Maybe the damage isnt as bad as you think? Was ABS still working correctly? -steve- |
