ok, i am having a load of troubl getting it to pass emissions in new york state. i have played with the carbs, oh yeah its an 82 grey market, cleaned the air filter box and screwed with the timing, but just a little. the HC levels are at 406 and need to be at 300. everything else is fine and passes. i don't really want to put a cat on the truck i dont even know if i can fit one to it with the amount of room there is. does anyone know if i would get in a b of trouble unch i took it and inspected it as a 1977 or 1978, because in new york if a truck is 25 years old or older it does not have to go through emmissions? I figure since its grey market the VIN won't be fully recognized in the computer? anyone out there offer some addvice please I am going insane without my truck to drive you know what i am talking about it sucks not having the rangie working AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! |

good luck

Ask the Rovers North website folks. esp. John Robison. He has a shop in Conn. |

Robvison has a shop in MA, plus he can't do the work for Paul. Paul, you have a few options: take it to a mechanic who can bring the HCs down or bring it to a emissions shop that will "help you out" (wink, wink) |

just for discussion, is this 300 HC level what was required in 1982?? or a current/recent requirement?? Jaime |

Paul, I'm sorry to hear about your problems. I forget, does your Range Rover have an air pump and the Pulsair Injection? If you do, the next step is to get an inexpensive cat. Check out Summit Racing, I think they have one for $100 and it should be enough to get you through. Does your truck have a center silencer as well as one in the rear? If so, you can remove the center silencer and install the cat there. There should even be a heat shield to help keep the heat of the cat away from the interior of the car. The truck will be a little noisier but it's not too bad. This is the set up I have on my '85. One last suggestion is try putting dry gas in your gas tank before you have it tested. I seem to remember that was a method a number of friends used back in the 70's to get their Camaros and Novas through inspection. Let me know how things go and if I can be of any help. Cheers, Paul |

Yep, I agree with Paul on the cat and dry gas. I have a summit racing cat brand new in box sitting in my attic. If you need it just come and get it. I only purchased one because my 88 RR has three cats and I was planning on replacing the middle one first. If you need an emissions shop I can recommend a good one in Queens (wink, wink). John |

I just had my '83 smogged today. HC count was at 25 ppm (220 is the limit). |

how did you pull that off? do you have a cat? and do you really mean 250 not 25 |

Catalytic converter, fuel injection, and I did mean 25 ppm...250 would not have passed if our limit is 220. The cat is a good idea, reset your timing to 6 degrees BTDC at idle (vacuum line removed), and maybe consider leaning your air/fuel mixture...it doesn't sound like it's right (running rich?). |

Yeah I have already leaned out the air/fuel mixture, and the timing a little bit. I just put a CAT on the truck this morning. You did however forget to mention your truck was fuel injected. That makes a big difference. It was running really rich for a while, now its ok. I am going to gte it re-inspected tomorrow morning, I'll let you know how it goes. thanks for the advice |

Okay, you may need some carburettor guru to do some work for you. If the fuel mixture is good and all the fuel is burning, your HC shouldn't be too high. You also don't mention whether your high levels are at idle, at 2500 rpm (or whatever rpm your state uses), or at both. Also, what carb(s)? Obviously, if you are using the dual Stromberg's, there probably are not too many people near you who can rework those carburettors. If you're running a Carter, Edelbrock or Holley, it should be easier. If HCs are high at idle, it may not be the air-fuel mixture but your idle jets. Likewise, if your mains are too large, and you are adjusting your mixture at idle, you can lean it up to where you think you are at the right ratio, but at higher RPMs it will be rich again (this would be high HC at the higher RPMs). The air-fuel mixture is not the only factor, as you often adjust this ratio at an engine RPM that is not exactly the operating RPM. This is not to say that this is not the way to adjust it, but if your idle and main jets are incorrect (as well as emulsion tubes, air correction jets, etc if your carb is equipped with them), then it won't make a lick how much you adjust the carb, short of replacing the mismatched components. (e.g. you will get the mixture right at that RPM, but the wrong jets, etc. will cause the mixture to incorrect at other RPMs...) BTW if you bought an Edelbrock, Carter or Holley right off the shelf and are running it as it came out of the box, it is not jetted properly for your engine. |

Paul Have you got any nearby places besides that town next to you to take your new toy off-road? Maybe we should try to put a little trip together. Let me know. Congratulatons. Cheers, Paul |
