88 RRC at 128k with a blown head gasket. Very tired sounding engine (valve train noise, cam rockers?) and very tired truck in general. I am trying to figure out whether to replace the gasket, replace the engine, or replace the truck. I have read that if I pull the bearings and see copper, then a full rebuild is necesary. Would I be better off finding an engine from a rollover or similar and dropping it in? I am really trying to find a way to tell whether I need to rebuild the entire engine without taking the engine completely apart to do so, or just replace the head gaskets. Has anyone been down this road before? Thanks for the advice. |

88 would have the steel shims, right? Pull the head, get it shaved and springs/valves checked, then rebuild with the newer composite gaskets. Don't even think of replacing the gaskets without sending the heads out! |
