Im planning to purchase a borla exhaust from cat back. I dont want my Disco to sound like a hot rod dont mind a deeper exhaust sound but not to loud. I want to know are they worth the 600 bucks? Thank I need all the feed back everyone has.

If you go offroad, you might not like it as the tip will get ripped off the first time you go onto a trail.

I wheel with a gentleman who went with the Borla. He said it didn't fit real well when he installed it and when we were offroad, he mangled the tip pretty well. I don't think it is overly noisy, in fact, I think it might be quieter than my stock exhaust minus resonator.

Peace,
Paul

Just have a muffler shop install an muffler you like that gives better performance and have the resonator removed in the back. I had a "turbo" muffler installed (the shop called it) and they bent a new pipe from there back and got rid of the resonator. was only $150. The "turbo" muffler was a little loud for my taste while cruising at 1500 RPM. Sounded nice other than that. I ended up putting a more conservative muffler on it and it still sound's better than stock with the resonator removed but really quiet. I had them route the tail pipe as high as possible and then it drops down just under the bumper so it will not likely get bent up while diggin'.

Pardon my ignorance; what's a resonator? Any why do you remove them? for better performance?

Kris,

If you look at the Discos (well, US-spec V8i D1 Discos anyway), in addition to the main muffler, there is a small muffler right at the end of the exhaust before the end of the tail-pipe. That little muffler is called a resonator, because its primary purpose is to alter the sound a bit.

When you you have mufflers and resonators and cats in an exhaust system, you restrict the exhaust flow somewhat. By removing cats and resonators, you reduce the backpressures, which in many cases, will help increase the horsepower somewhat. Nothing too remarkable when you're driving something that's a full-time 4x4 with the aerodynamics of a brick wall, but, it could help a little....

FWIW....

I have a Borla. The tip won't get ripped off, but it gets mangled pretty easily. I look at mine as a tip-slider :), it protects the pipe inside from getting flattened well. It is louder than stock, but it's not too bad. I got it not so much for the fancy tip, but because it is stainless steel, so it won't rust out any time soon. The "performance gains" are all hype, I didn't notice any.

Getting rid of the resonator and hugh muffler also drops some weight which couldn't hurt either. That's probably where you get the additional performance. hehe :)

I've got the Borla sitting in my garage waiting for the weather to warm up a little bit more before I install it.

I'm looking forward to the sound and the perception of a performance increase.

Still, nothing beats the supercharger performance of the Honda "Type R" sticker on the back of the Disco!

Shane,
$150 for a muffler and pipe? Just because its a Land Rover doesn't mean people should charge whatever they want. Ask for a print-out of the $150 quote and call another shop and see what the same parts cost and how much labor is for the same time you were quoted originally (don't tell them its for a Land Rover). Compare the two and I bet you will be suprised.

I was quoted $110 to install a Flowmaster muffler and pipe to replace the resonator, $60 to use a generic muffler. A generic "turbo" muffler runs $20-40 each.

Most mufflers have baffles in it to restrict the airflow and force the exhaust through the fiberglass, if you turn it around it flows more freely yet still muffles it [some]. Do not run it straight unless its a really hot day. When you turn the engine off it sucks air back in through the exhaust...if it's cold air it could crack your exhaust manifold or possibly do more damage.

...But if you want to hear what a 266ci 4.0 V8 Land Rover engine/exhaust can sound like click the following link:

http://www.speedminded.com/vids.html

info: Factory mufflers are stainless steel and Type R doesn't mean supercharged.

I have heard Borla on corvettes and other vehicles but never on a Land Rover...I am sure it sounds good but you're just paying $600 for polished stainless steel and I don't think the pipes are any bigger than stock. I think 4" down pipes and dual exhaust with stainless steel mufflers for $600 would be a little more realistic. The benefit of polished stainless steel is mud rarely sticks to it but it sprays off easily if it does.

I bought the Borla exhaust mainly for its long life, but now I want to have a rear resonator cut in- the deep droning noise is too much at low rpm's, especially on the highway. It fits very well and hangs higher under the truck ( the muffler's thinner). I have a 5 speed and thought it would be a fun combination, but it can give a headache.

I have the Borla on my 95 D1 - great fit and I solved the exhaust tip problem with a grinder. Don't pay 600 though ... got mine for less than half that at summit racing. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just gone to the local muffler shop and had a flowmaster installed for even cheaper.

Jason is right. I have been quoted $85 for a Flowmaster installed at a local muffler shop, and generic was around $20 to $40. Shop around. Do not go to the dealer.

Let me ask you guys this: what are the effects of getting rid of the cats? We don't have any emission testing crap down here; if I get rid of them, will I get fault codes? I'm sure they are going to go bad soon, and even from Nathan they are expensive.

I guess what I'm asking is, do I need them?

Thanks.

Another question (Not trying to hijack the thread)
Can I just remove the resonator? Mine is always getting hung up on things. Where and how would I re-route the exhaust?

(I'm not going to cut a hole in the side like Greg Davis...although I wish I had the balls to tell my wife I was!)
