Has anyone tried to retrofit the D2 door hinges on the D1's yet. I am not positive, but I'm pretty sure they will work. I like the new look of the hinges and they seem to open and close so much more smoothly. I am going to try to put them on my '98 D1.

Thanks for any input

I think that the hinges are the same and I think they are smoother too. Good idea!

Where do you think I could buy the hinges?

Your best bet would probably be the local dealer or some of the internet dealers. I would also recomend changing the slider assembly that is under the door and then the engine oil in order to get maximum sliding performance.

above message did not go through correctly. I was saying that the slider under the door shoulc be changed as well and then change the engine oil to get maximum performance.

Thanks

I have heard that the hinges cost upwards of $300.00 not to mention the other stuff.

I will check with the dealer tomorrow. I am willing to spend up to 2,000 because I really like smooth hinges

dont buy them from a dealer. get them from a wrecked D2 in a junkyard. I know Greg Davis is parting out a D2, i bet he could help you out.

Also, (if they will even work), consider doing just the drivers door only (since im assuming it is the door that you use the most) to save some $$$

Instead of changing the hinges on your D1, you might try to salvage the door hinge grease from the D2 and using it on your D1. I think this is the only difference, but i could be wrong. It is worth a try instead of swapping hinges.

Gents,

I recently had an altercation with the neighbor, who ripped the door off of my D1. The hinges were ruined, so I just used some off of my house door. Its held up perfectly fine with a little JB Weld, and I think its operation is smoother than before. Just a suggestion.

I will have to try the new grease and if that doesn't work I will probably just switch over the hinges and other hardware as money i no object I just want a smooth operating hinge

Try swapping them out for some hinges from a Delorian, it sure would look bad-ass if you doors opened up-wards!!!!!

I went ahead and bought all of the new hinges today (for every door) I also purchased the slider mechanism for the rear door as well as all of the latches. Total was just over $3500.00 I hope to have it all installed by next week.

Richard,

Not a bad deal for a good set of hinges!

$3500! Seriously?
To each his own, but for that amount I think I might just be able to scrounge up a roof rack, an ARB front bumper with a 12000 lb mile marker electric winch, a tjm rear bumper, an arb locker and compresor for the rear and a set of HD axles to go with the locker. By shopping around a little I think I could get all that for about $3500. My doors would not be as smooth but I would have the better truck.
My opinion only, off corse. What does everyone else think?

Hey, daniel. I would have to agree with Richard on this one. There is nothing in this world like having the confidence that your doors open and close smoothly and will not fall off. It seems a little steep for the price but if you look at the dealer cost for those items, $3500 is a pretty good deal.

I'd much rather have the smoooth door hinges. Why would anyone want all that other stuff?

Money well spent. Take care of your hinges, and they'll take care of you.
