I was curious to see if many people are hesitent to go wheeling with younger people. I know that at times people do not want to go with me because I am 18 and they don't believe that I know what the hell I am doing. Do many of you also feel that way, or do you really not care too much?

I don't like wheeling with young people but it has nothing to do with their skill. It's generally just a difference in purpose in wheeling. When I go offroad, I could generally care less if I do 2 hours or 5 hours of trail riding. Most young guys want to be out on the trails all day and half the night.

Give me a couple good cigars and some Jamison or single malt. Or even a good Belgian abbey ale. That's all I need for a good wheeling trip.

hey Chris -

I go out with whomever wants to wheel. Not a big fan of people that think they know more than they really do, but that is usually not age related!

What kind of wheeling do you like to do - pure skill/vehicle tests, expedition style, ?>??

Maybe you need to make sure you are linking up with people with the same set of expectations for that day's outing.

to take this thread serious, i gota say age dosent matter . when I started wheeling I didnt even have a licence. I started pulling cables and digging tires out for a group of guys that had as much beer in there veins as blood. many of them would give the young guys shit and spend all day messing with a young guy trying to learn the ropes instead of paying attention to what was important . my first trips where what we called swamp crossings. we would cross long streches of untracked swamps in wisconsin. navigating areas with sink holes that where bottomless and bogs that would open up and swallow a truck. I remember a few fights breaking out when some of the cooler guys had enough of the drunks picking on a young guy just for being young. the fact was you had to earn your keep and work your ass off to gain the respect of the group. when I built my first truck I had learned what worked and what didnt and I tried to fill the shoes of the older guys sticking up for the newbies because I had walked in there muddy footprints.

so today I still welcome anybody of any age as long as there intentions and dedication aligns with those in the group. wheeling has become much less the hillbilly event it was when I started in it and more mainstream . with that I think it brings way more people of different walks of life togather and that is good in my eyes. the only thing that really needs to be adressed in my opinion is when someone believes there shinny rig and fat wallet puts them in charge. money sure dosent buy knowledge in this sport. it may look that way in the parking lot but when it comes to thinking the whole group thru a tough spot with the least amount of damage and not taking dangerous short cuts thinking and expierience is whats best.

Age doesn't matter to me one bit. Being an ass (or not) on the trail *does* matter. I prefer to not off-road with someone who is being an ass.

Being an ass is:
Driving beyond you or your vehicle's capabilities (getting stuck doesn't count)
Gratuitous damage to the environment just to get a few thrills (like driving with wheels on the embankment of a trail so you can see how far you can lean without tipping)
Doing dangerous things and ignoring people who point out what you're doing is dangerous.

I'm sure I can think of more, but I know it when I see it.

Good points Tom. I've seen a lot of guys doing just that. I've watched guys destroy perfectly good trucks that way. One guy buried his truck to the roof about a year ago. Drinking heavily and deep water don't mix. Also watched a guy roll his 88 down a hill for no good reason. Luckily he and his young son were strapped in.

I also know some young wheelers who are very sharp and good at what they do. Invariably, they all have parents who are careful and thoughtful.

(Musky that was a low blow!)

I am a high school teacher and I go out wheeling with my students from time to time.
I am even thinking of starting a school 4x4 club to advocate all of the good things about the sport.

There are even a few students at my school who drive Discos.
I guess their daddy's bought them for the spoiled little brats! You know how costly a 94-96 Disco can be!

(Hope you can hear the sarcasm there)

I am 17, and I will have to say that I prefer to wheel with older people. Most high school guys just go out to see how fast they can hit mud puddles, and how much mud they can get caked on their vehicles. Not to say that there aren't some good teen drivers, but the majority aren't.

I don't care about age. If you don't do some thing that will put lives in danger (other then your own) I'll wheel with ya. However, I perfer to wheel with people that know more then I do cause I still have lots to learn myself. But, I like to get out so I go when ever and with whom ever wants to go.

a 4x4 club is a good idea but when I was in High School and me and friends wheeled we usuaully crashed at the end of the day and drank a lot and did drugs and who wants there teacher around to see that.
I'm not saying that is every teenager because there are teens out there that are pretty responsible. That is just how I expierienced High School and by 4x4 and camping it was a perfect exscuse to get away from authrity figures in our lives. But our school did have a 4x4 club and it worked out good and we had some badass pictures in our yearbook but the only time we particapated was during school.

So what you're saying, then, is that if I start this club, I could get my alcohol and drugs for FREE!!!

Great idea Prescott!

yes to drugs and the alchol you would have to be thier buyer, most likely the students would definitley want an A before they hook you up. Then you would definitley be the coolest teacher in the minds of the students. But just be careful cause those teens will tell thier friends and before you now it everyone knows and you get drug tested then fired. You would probably be suprised well maybe not about the amount of drugs High School teens move and that is not just the ghetto schools, I went to super rich white HS and there is no-way I would be able to go out this weekend and score the same quality of drugs as I did in HS. I think that is the main reason I grew out of doing drugs I just could'nt get the quality in College so Drug use just faded out

Yea there are a lot of drugs that move around my school. It is one of the most expensive schools in Indiana and pretty much where all the richest people in Indianapolis send their kids. And the amount of drugs that float around is amazing. In our class 20 kids have been kicked out because of drugs. However I find it odd that I know my Calc and physics teacher both do drugs...That is very scary to me

Chris-

I'm from Indianapolis, and I know exactly how you feel. My advice is to find out the rover events that are going on this summer and got to at least one. I went to Killington Vermont last summer for the Killington Expedition. The event itself was a flop because of lousy hosts, however the trails were awesome, and all of the east coast discowebbers were there. I was 18 at the time and none of them seemed to care. All of them were really cool guys. And a word of advice: if you think your gonna pick up a 18 year old chick at a rover event, good luck, because if there even is one, she is probably with her dad. The way I see it if a guy throws a beer in your hand when he knows your 18 then he doesn't mind wheeling with you; and Killington was not a sober trip for me.

Ahhh . . . The Private schools of Indianapolis. Nothing but Hot Ass Girls with seventy year old fathers married to thirty year old silicone and bottox infested milfs for mothers. These are the mothers that are doing just as much Coke as their Hot Ass Daughters. Memories of Park Tudor. Where the Rovers don't go off road anymore and everyone's nose is bleeding. My brother and I are the last of the Park Tudor "almost Graduates" that still actually go Off road with our rovers. My brothers has had a Defender, Range Rover and Currently has a 1969 Series IIA. I'm just stuck with the same Disco I that I bought my Junior Year.

I am currently on a leave of absence from school in New York until March and I'm Home in Indy. If you know of a trail you wanna ride or at least something away from the boring streets of Carmel give me a call. Cell - (317) 514-1078.

You guys sure have made my private school experience seem boring. For me a cool ride home was when the bus hit all the green lights. Also by chance has anyone else been getting hit by a backdoor trojan horse virus attempt mulitple times today?

Greg,

I thought that was very funny. I grew up in a family of teachers and I have been to some teacher parties that would school the high schoolers.

When my sister graduated and got here first teaching job she started as a long term sub. I was just out of the marine corps and her and I went to see a teacher movie...I think it had Michaell Pfiffer, can't remember the name but it was about a bunch of poor kids. Anyway, we snuck a bunch of beer in and as we finished a beer we rolled it down under the seats. The slope was such that you could here the bottles rolling, rolling rolling and then you could hear the clink at it hit the bottom. Damb that was fun. I think we drank a 12 pack. On the way out of the theater she ran into two of her students. I think it was her second week. She was rather paronoid and feeling kind of bad knowing the kind of example she just set. Very funny.

Skill and desire matters more than age. I am 24 but get out about 4 days a month which is embarassing to how often I used to get out ( 24 hours a week). I totally understand the young mentality of flooring it through mud holes just to get your truck dirty. My guess is that they don't clean the trucks themselves. Perrone, if you like your Irish Whiskey, at least spell it correctly to prove you actually do consume this fine beverage!!! If you love it, show respect. You wouldn't misspell your wife's name now would you? Just giving you a hard time :)
