Well, the Rover bug has bit me and I might be bringing home a new old rover soon. The only problem is that it's in NC and I'm in PA. I'm planning on driving down there and towing it home. I'd like to drive it, but it needs a new clutch. So what are my options? Will my disco be up for the challange?

It's a 75 Series III 109 SW.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The Disco will tow it fine. Little slow up the hills and your top end highway speed will be around 60 mph, but it will do it. Drop the front and rear prop shafts on the Series III to isolate the transmission.

Trailer it or disconnect both prop shafts at the diffs and tie up securely. Uhaul rents auto trailers, but I don't think they let then go one way unless you rent a truck too.

You can use a auto dolly as well, towed my 88 like that. Again, dissonnect the rear prop shaft at the diff.

How hard is it to drop the drive shafts? If i drop the shafts, can I use a tow bar, or should i use a dolly or flatbed?

Thanks Ron.

Zak-
Remember to tie the doors shut so they don't open if you hit a bump. You don't want the hinges to get sprung or tweaked with a door opening up and flapping in the wind. Ever consider just bringing down a clutch and tools and driving it back? Sounds like an great project, good for you!

Zak, put in 4th gear, push it down a hill till it starts and don't stop!!! Drive it all the way home w/o stopping and you'll be fine!!!

Zak, aren't you going to be a father soon?

Sounds good Snow, so who wants to drive down there and put the clutch in with me???

John, yet, just over a month to go. Not sure why I'm looking at getting a Series, but it's such a good deal, i figure i can sell it for a bit more than I'm paying for it if i decide not to keep it. Plus we need another vehilce that I can put a child seat it. Haven't found a DOT approved childseat that will fit in a roll bar for a miata.

Couldn't you tie a car seat to the trunk of the Miata? hehehe

I don't think you want to own a series truck and be a father at the same time (too much work involved in both)...that is of course if the 109 is in excellent shape ...

Good luck Zak!!!

Zak,

I'll go down with you if we can make it a weekend, down and back road trip. I'll have to get permission......... :) .......... But, I imagine I can work it into the schedule.

Shame we couldn't work it around Uwharie. I'm not sure if I'll get to go down to Uwhare yet or not as I may be going to the Carribean and I'm not sure if I can get off from work for both. :)

Well, I'm hoping to pick it up in a few weeks or so. I'd rather pick it up before the little one arrives, and Uwhare is out for me. Although hopefully next year I'll be there with the 109!!

Zak,

I have towed my Ex-MOD 109 many times and I can safely say that getting a U haul trailer is the best. But, make sure you get a good one and if they give you a bad one don't be afraid to tell the Uhaul person that this trailer sucks and you want another one. (We rented a U haul trailer for MAR 2002, and we got a crappy one that would push and pull. On the other hand, I got one when I was taking it over to TRG and that trailer was very good.)

I have towed my 109 on one of those trailers that just lifts up the front with my disco. It did.....ok. My GMC truck tows the rover a lot better and with more power on tap, not to mention that the GMC has a full towing package and is kinda designed for that (I'm not saying that the disco can't do it, its just that my GMC does it a lot better. But on the other end of the spectrum, my GMC is 2WD so I am not totally dissing Land Rover).

As Snowman said before, secure all openings/doors. They do fly open sometimes.

If you do get a U haul, then you will most likely have to deflate the tires so that the tire straps can go around them. Be prepared for this.

Good Luck!

P.S. Rover Club House is in that general vicinity, you could fly in, get them to replace the clutch and go! Just a thought....

Zack,

Hillsborough is about an hour and a half away from me, I am in Winston-Salem. Tell me when you are coming down and we can meet up.

Zak,

Here is what you do. Rent a Uhaul trailer one day local on a Sat at someplace closed on Sun. Pick it up in the early morning on Sat and tow it down with you and drop it back sunday night. They only charge for one day this way ($50). I would recommend getting HD springs before your trip though if at all possible. Some of the hills on 81 will be a bitch but if you pop it into 3rd and get a bit of a run at the hill they will go ok. I would not tow bar it unless you know it will roll well the whole way. One stuck brake or bad wheel bearing and you the 109 and the disco are in trouble.

If it is the black one on ebay it looks ghetto. If not then that is cool. If you can hold out to the end of summer Dom will be selling his 76 109 with the nissan diesel. It is really nice and much more local.

Tow dolley with rear prop shaft disconnected is the way to go. Have towed several series trucks like that, one recently from Florida to Virginia. Make sure rear tire air pressure is high enough, or you build up a lot of heat, particularly if truck has tube tires.
Pulling an entire trailer, plus truck is pushing it with a Disco, I think.

Zak, let's go down to NC, push the 109 to a Walmart parking lot, pull out the transmision and replace the clutch. That way you can drive the truck home... :)

Ron, how much for a clutch and other parts needed for a 109????

PS: I'll help you do it but I'm gonna need your first born....one more thing, make sure it's a boy 'cause I already have too many females at home (wife, two daughters and a dog)....

Well it looks like the deal is not going to go through. Oh well. I'll have to find another one. But thanks for all the info guys! As always, you people are amazing.

So, now I just have to decide what to get, RRC, another Disco, Series, or my personal favorite, a Unimog

Zak,

Just saw this thread, if you find something a little closer to home I'll drag it for you. If it's a long way you can use my trailer, you just need to buy an Electronic Brake Actuator (not pulling mine out) and I'll help you install it. (I am assuming you have a class 3 hitch on your Disco). Actuator less than $100 as I recall and 3-4 beers time to install. Did a double take myself last weekend saw a RRC with a RRC LWB up on a trailer headed south on Rt. 1 in Kennett. Happy Hunting...my vote is get a Series.

I am SURE I have a clutch on the shelf somewhere John C. They are pretty cheap, the disc can be had for 50 or so. Plate would be more.

Zak, keep looking you will find one. Dom and I will be turning wrenches this weekend in hopes of getting the 109 out by Sunday, feel free to stop by.

Ron
