I did a search looking for the best price on these starters, but no one listed the selling vendors name. I tried 4x4 Connection, but didn't have any luck. The solenoid on my 97 Discovery kicked the bucket this weekend so now I am scrambling to get a replacement. If the Mean Green can't be found at a reasonable price I will just get another stocker for now. If any of you know a good source for the Mean Green, I am all ears.

diesel,

be careful on what version you get as the early ones were prone to rusting inside and really fucking up the starter. this is due to not having any drain holes for the water/moisture to get out. went thru 2 of them before finding this out.

Jaime,

Do you know if MG6134 has the required drain hole drilled to prevent rust?

SummitRacing.com is now carrying them, if you don't see the Rover app call them. Their prices are *usually* among the lowest (SBC MG's are $289 or so).

So anyway. I got the mean green starter from GBR. I removed the old one and noticed that the number of teeth on the gear was different. The The old one had 9 and the new one has 11. Is this a problem? I started fitting the new one and also found the the "lucar" will not fit the new terminal. Should I just cut the connector off, strip the end and tighten the screw? Last question. The main starter lead (+12V) is pretty close to the main body of the starter which is ground. Should I wrap this section in electrical tape to reduce chances of an arc? I don't think 12Volts will just a 1/4" gap very easily, but this is a high current wire and shorting will melt chit I am sure.

Oh wait, I lied. Here is another question. The new starter is configured differently and the heat shield won't fit as it originally did. Should I just get it as close as possible or did any of you just remove it. I know it was put there for a reason, so I myself am voting for just make it fit. What are your opinions.

Mr Diesel

I got a MG starter myself. The number of teeth should not matter as long as they have the same geometry; and the # of teeth may just be part of the high torque design.

Just remove all the exhast heat sheilds and disgard them. They are there to protect the starter, but are not needed with the MG.

The wiring ends up being custom routed with this starter because the terminals are in different place from the Lucas starter.

Diesel,

sorry I didn't get back to you. not sure of the part number on mine. since you bought it from GBR, assume Bill probably would have the newer version.

also as Randall mentioned, mine does not have a heat shield. not sure why, yet, haven't had heat related issues with it. just the water problem.

Thanks for the information fellas. I am going to tackle this beast right now then. The part number I received was MG6134 which correlates to the post above from Clarance. I am still not completely comfortable with leaving the heat shield off, but it may have to be that way.

Jaime, I did notice that the MG starter had two black rubber drains on it. I imagine this indicates the revised version of the starter.

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but there appears to be a heavy guage braided wire that is loose now that I have the old starter removed. This is the ground right? Is it connected to the top starter mounting bolt?

Mr Diesel

That braided wire is an engine to frame grounding strap. Make sure it is on there good as this is a good time to rebuild the grounding strap's connection point at the frame.

Thanks for the info on the grounding strap. I was pretty sure what it was, but couldn't remember disconnecting it. The top starter bolt view was blocked by the exhaust manifold, which is where the ground strap connects to the engine. I'll rebuild it sometime in the near future.
