Hi All.

Could you fine folks out there help me in deciding on some auxillary lights for my 95 Disco?

2 Questions:

1. How do you decide whether to fit Fog lamps or Driving lights? Since we do not get that much fog around here in Seattle, as in say San Francisco, I am thinking I should get some driving lights. Please let me know if my thinking is in the wrong direction.

2. Once the above question has been answered, then the eternal question. Which brand to buy? Hella 500s? PIAAs? or IPFs?

Any all all input is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Sanu.

driving for long distance on back roads or in the desert. fog for fog.

all 3 choices are good. Hella well liked by many members on this board. personally have PIAAs Super 80s driving and am quite happy with them.

also do a keyword search for more info.

I have PIAA 40 series driving lights and while I'm very happy with them I use my fogs way more often. I use them to illuminate the ditches, the sides of the road, the trail as well as in the fog. So I'd say they're quite suitable for multiple lighting tasks. On the trail I usually go very slow, especially at night, so the wider beam pattern is quite usefull.

Unless you do a lot of high-speed night driving on fairly flat ground (road or desert), I'd suggest fogs as your first auxiliary set and then driving lights as your next set.

IMHO, of course.

the hella 500's are outdated 80's junk - pepboys crap.
best small light for the $$ is ipf 868 / 968.

no data on piaa's though i think they are more $

As another option - try researching Lightforce. They have some very light units both incandescent and HID, all with focus capability built in.

I've used the 170 and 140 in my personal truck and they are bulletproof fixtures.

Fogs will project out to the sides more and illuminate more of the trail. Some even illuminate more ground directly in front of you.

Driving are for more long distances ahead of you. I don't know what kind of driving you do, but I would start out with fog.

As for brands...My opinion is that almost any fog will do, as you aren't really going for intense light, but more overall trail illumination, so go with the least expensive...even the outdated 80's crap Hella 550's.

When you buy driving, I would go big. I have Hella 3000's and they are bright.

Also consider accessories and legal specifications for your state. Some states make you keep off road lights covered whenever you are on the road, so if they have a permanent grille in them you could get a ticket if you can't find a cover to fit over them. They are all so expensive, though, that you may want a grille for them even when you are using them.

I know Hella makes grills and covers for almost all of their lights, which is another reason to go with them. They have a good reputation.

If you want to go the redneck way, you may want KC's. I had some on my old Toyota, and they were brighter than my Hellas.

I like the IPF's (Steve convinced me but i'm easy) They work great in conjunction with upgraded low beams for night trail stuff but i am going to add some cheap lamps down low for fog and rocks to eat..

I'm strongly considering the PIAA 940 Dual lights. In a single housing, you get both a fog and a driving light. You can find them for around $200 for the set.

If they are for the bumper, I can highly recommend the IPF J-01 lights. They are both driving and fog. I personally can't tell much difference when using the driving light, but the fog lights are immensly useful here in PA where it gets really dark at night and I commute home on small hilly, curvy roads. Also, as mentioned above, they help illuminate the sides on trails.

I also like being able to use the fogs only when following someone as they are not so bright to the people in front.

Erik,

You mentioned the Lightforce 170 and 140s.

Any major differences between the 2, other than the 1 inch diameter? On a 95 Disco, would you recommend one over the other?

They seem really nice, especially at that price point (140 - $119 & 170 - $169).

Appreciate your input.

Sanu.

Sanu,

Lightforce 170s are much brighter with a 100w Xenophot bulb, compared to the 55w 140 bulb. The 170s are in the stock D1 ARB Non-Airbag bumper center position on my truck.

I use the 140s up top, mounted under the roof rack and behind the limb-risers for protection. These took a lot of hits during a recent trip and work without complaint.

Email me an address or visit my site for information on their products. I have some printed collateral if you give me a mailing address.

In the immortal words "you can never have enough light"

I run 6 Hella 4000s and I love it. Don't buy cheap 500s or the like just because they are inexpensive to replace. Plastic lights that are cheap are cheap because they will break. 4000s are virtually indestructible. My pre-runner buddy had a light tab break off and his 4000 bounced around in his skid plate for about 250 miles offroad and still fired right up. The lens didn't even break. Did I mention that he did this TWICE!

Personally I don't think lights are worth skimping on. Compared to the other stuff you do to your truck, they aren't very costly, but it's reeeeeeeally cool to have good ones.

I've been real pleased with my procomps. However I am running some piaas on the top outsides for distance. the others are procomp 130s on the top and procomp 80s? I think? they were 40 each.. here is how they end up looking...
