Well, they had to do something with them because they won't sell.

They feel like a matchbox compared to the disco

I found it fun to drive. Think of it as a rally racer verses an 4x4 and it will put a smile on your face. Really rev the hell out of it.

Freelanders are great. I don't know why so many people want to compare it to the Disco because they are not the same type of vehicle. Freelanders will sell and they do sell. They are now Land Rovers top volume vehicle and they serve the purpose that they were meant to serve extreemly well. If I was in the market for a smaller vehicle the freelander is what I would buy. And they are great in snow.

I am in the same position: My discovery is in the shop, I have a freelander loaner. I find it very fun to drive, the tiptronic transmission is fun to use and the engine is very responsive. Like adtoolco said, I would compare it to a rally car not a 4x4. Not to say that I would ever buy one for myself though. It would be a nice car for a woman to drive.

I find it funny when people bitch about the freelander not being able to match their Disco's off-road performance. Get real! Which makes me wonder, how much hardcore wheeling do you possibly do to bitch about the FL not being up on par with your Disco's off-road prowess? Personally I would look at it as being pampered in all that smooth and quiet ride the little LR would offer while my big-ass, noisy-ass, gas-guzzling-ass Disco is in the shop. They may even have a hard time taking the FL away from me. So before you whine and moan about how sad you are for getting a sorry-assed FL while your off-road beast is in the shop, c'mon, how much hard core rock climbing or extreme expedition could you possibly miss during the time your truck is in the shop?

big-ass, noisy-ass, gas-guzzling-ass Disco............... Glenn, it's good to see that most of us think of our vehicles as the same:)

Man, I loved the HSE I got from MainLine in Philly. And LR Cape Fear let me put some laps in a S model off road. I compare the Freelander to the likes of a Rally car......well maybe not as cool as a rally car, but waaaaaay more nimble than the pig I drive.

Well, at least you got something. My disco went in today and I was told that because I did not buy the vehicle from them, they would not provide a loaner (it was the first time I had ever asked for one). However, there was a rental car place across the road that has decent prices and they'd be glad to have someone drive me over....

Until the Freelander the Discovery was the cheapest Land Rover made. Why buy a Honda CRV when for a few grand more you can have a "Land Rover". Think of a Porsche 924 or 944, titled the "poor mans" Porsche (thats PORSH-ah, yes TWO syllables)....It's all in the name but the price doesn't necessarily mean the quality is any less.

Hey Michael,

This other dealer in Philly (LR West Chester) put me in a Pontiac Sundfire that was almost purple. It was all I could do to fit in that thing. :) But I didn't mind because their service dept folks were incredibly nice.

I keep seeing a Freelander on Ebay with front end damage. They are asking way too much for it but if I could get it for 5 or 6 grand I would scoop it up and definitly stiffen the suspention, lighten it up, lower it about an inch, add a little NOS, and join a local rally club. Yeah-haw, I'm addicted to speed too!!!

I could tow it with my Disco which I love allot, but for different reasons.

(Oh yea, I would upgrade the brakes too. You have to be able to stop Anybody in Massachusetts wanna go halfsies with me?)

I was also given a Freelander as a loaner and I have to say given the options for loaners I was very happy to get a freelander. Much better than the trailblazers and montecarlos I was getting before. But, I didn't find the freelander a joy or smooth compared to my Disco. The A-pillar is poorly designed and gives you too much of a blind spot. The steptronic shifter is backwards (probably okay for right hand drives). The gas and brake peddal was not spaced well and reminded me of an american car. The engine felt like a 4 cyl. But as I said, Given the options I was very happy witht he little car (sorry it's not a truck). If it was me I wouldn't buy one but there are lots of people out there happy to pick one up. Too bad Land Rover couldn't make something more like the TJ at the price point of the Freelander or even the Jeep 4 door hardtop TJ prototype (not the Liberty).

Paul:
Sunfire, ha! I can barely fit those things and you probably got 4 or 5" on me (height, that is). Did you buy your vehicle from them? If not, did you pay for the "loaner"? Maybe I'm just paranoid, but it seems like they are doing anything to keep me away...:)

Hey Michael,

My response met some kind of error, so I'll try again.

I bought the Pig at LR Cary, NC in 2001. They were the closest dealer (2 hours away). However, since I spent all off '02 in Philly, Ron Brown at LR Main Line hooked me up. Main Line is who loaned me the HSE Free Lander and the Warminster D2 when I needed service. I had to fill out a form and bring the cars back with gas. Very Very nice. I went to LR WC in Philly and they were out of loaners; that's when I got the Sunfire. No, I wasn't out cruising chicks in it! :) LR WC did the same thing as LR Cape Fear did when out of loaners. They called Enterprise and got me a car. I had to pay for the daily insurance which was like 15 bucks. Everytime I had to go to any dealer, I have been taken care of; in fact I have never been back to the dealership of purchase (that's only because it is 2 hours away).

Maybe someone on this board who works for LRNA or a Dealer can comment. It sucks that you have been having so many issues.

Paul

I've said this before, but what the heck.

We leased an HSE Freebie last July and it's a decent little car - Al's right, its no truck.

Scoots around town, took it to Co Springs & Estes park and returned roughly 24mpg for the trip - definitely all on the pavement.

I had three of the neighborhood big guys in it last night and they were all surprised by the room inside.

But - ingress, visibility, control placement, egress all suck. I'm glad my wife drives it regularly. I'll stick with the Series and the Disco, thank you very much.
