A few guys around here, myself included, have been contemplating the idea of starting a 4x4 club here on campus. With all the eco-nazi, anti-corporation clubs around here we think it might be cool to have an outlet for those who don't exactly flow down that same stream of thought, plus it would be a great chance to introduce others to the sport and best of all if we make an official organization the school will have to make some funds available to us for club activities. We have had a few threads around here lately that have sort of touched on the subject and apparently a few of you have experience with this sort of thing so I want to ask you for some guidance.

The thing that concerns us the most is liability, we don't want some yuppie kid's dad or something trying to hold any club officers, trail leaders, or the school liable if junior fucks up his new Tahoe. Not really sure what the best way to go about this is but I am assuming the school is going to want to know about it before they would authorize the formation of such an organization. There aren't exactly very many people I would consider overly competent offroaders but I think we have enough to lead some trail rides and teach any greenies the proper techniques without much carnage -of course there is always the person who is going to tear their shit up no matter what amount of guidance they have and that is the sort we are worried about.

Any advice you guys have about forming this type of club and effectively training newbies will be very much appreciated, I would especially like to hear the wisdom of those who have been down this path before.

It goes without saying that when/if this club is implemented there will be no alcohol or drug use during any club functions, there are enough of us who disagree with alcohol use while wheeling to uphold that.

Thanks guys!!!

Well, this is actually looking a little more promising. Just got back from recovering a Cherokee that was a foot or so from flipping over after a VERY bad line choice for a hill descent. From the people I was talking to during the ordeal there appear to be more people here w/ stockers that would be interested in wheeling than I previously thought. At this point it doesn't have to be anything crazy, I would just really enjoy letting people get to know what they can actually do with their trucks (safely).

I can probably handle the basics so if no one feels inclined to give tips on how to educate newbies thats fine but I would really like some insight as to how you think the liability issue should be handled because that seems to be the most pressing.

(FWIW there was no alcohol involved in the events that led to the recovery tonight..... not until everyone was safely home anyway :))

the club i belong to has it's own bylaws and a liability waiver you have to sign to be a member or even just to ride or drive on just one trail run. go to www.sc4wda.org there is a copy on the website. the rest of the site is pretty outdated, and the unfortunately the links to most of the pictures don't work, at least not for me. if the link doesn't work, i'll recheck and repost tonight when i get home.
