i am not sure if this has been posted on already, but i knew a search would show up with all the different shock discussions....so i thought i would post...
i won't tell you how many miles are on my truck, but i would like to know a range.....just a general range, i know its specific to each person, but mine feels "especially free" in turns....thanks,
jess

....after going over a speed bump or jumping on the back bumper (or rocking vehicle side to side) does it continue to sway or bounce/spring when you stop? If so, then the shocks are bad. The simpliest way is push down on rear bumper then release and see if it returns to normal height w/o bouncing.

If the shocks are not bad then maybe the springs have lost their "spring?", I don't know what your mileage is but they may be old and sagging like my grandmother.

My Disco is a '96 (122k miles) with the original springs and it is at least an inch lower than when it was new. I need springs and two of my shocks are leaking. I need new everything.

If your springs and shocks are both bad, you could try to modify your D1 with the RR air ride suspension. Ive heard crazier things?

Terry,

Why on God's earth would ANYONE willingly put Rangie air springs on a perfectly good Disco? Just instally good springs (RTE, OME) on the Disco, and some Bilsteins or OMEs and be done with it.

My woodheads were cooked at 60k or before. I have Bilsteins swapped in from my other RR with almost 100k on them and they are like new. So there you go.

No,

But maybe you're right and I have cabin fever. Or maybe it's just "Space Madness". Whatever it is, I've got a beer calling my name.

After killing two sets of Rancho 9234s for my rear, I put the original Woodheads back on my Disco. While the valving might be slightly off for my springs, they are still in good shape.

I meant rear suspension.

How much is it to replace the shocks and springs (inclding installation for a mechanically inapt person)?

My Woodheads were trashed after 35K. Upgraded to OME Springs and Shocks for $550 from 4wheelparts.com Did the install myself in 4 hours. You can find a shop to do the labor for $200-$250.

I heard once you replace the shocks/springs, you need to have the alignment done as well?

Alignment? For what? You haven't changed the steering at all (at least not in any adjustable way on our trucks).

I killed my fronts by 30 k (warranty replacement) replaced everything with a lift and Bilsteins at 70k. at 124k now with same set up.

Bushings: I just replaced mine. Personally I think they should have been done by 80k..I stuck with rubber FWIW

Darren,

On a Rover (well, on the Series/Def/Disco/classic Rangie.... not the Freelander or new Rangie), all you can adjust is the toe... the castor/camber is fixed, not much can be done w/o serious work. If you're dealing with 2" of lift or less, I wouldn't even think about the alignment....

Over 2" of lift, you're starting to play with angles more, might need to consider more complex adjusting, but, otherwise, fugeetabootit....
