It appears Discus does not support the posting of mp3's, so if you think you might be able to enlighten me, email hatchetjack@hotmail.com. I will send you a 140kb mp3 file of my truck trying to start.
96 4.o with new valves installed @ 30,000 miles... now at 95,000. It sounds like perhaps a bent valve but a search in the archives indicates most if not all of the valve issues were rather gradual. My truck simply shut down at about 40 miles an hour and would not restart. When I tried... it sounded like a box of hammers being tossed around. A horrible, expensive noise. It has oil and it did not overheat (unless the gauge is faulty). I tried to start it the day after and it was slightly better, but still would not stay running.
My first thought was "timing chain". But timing chains almost never break, and if it did the thing couldn't even try to idle. Second thought was "valve". A common problem.
Ugh... whatever it is, I know it is the noise of 100 dollar bills walking out my wallet.
Thanks for your help.

Joe.

I had the same noise on my 96 disco 1 w/ 98*** miles on it, take off the rocker arm cover and check for a loose arm. I cant guarantee that is the problem but tthat is what mine was, and luckily nothing since

It sounds like you may have ran over a box of hammers. If you look under your front bumper, the box may have got caught in your radiator support. I had a similar problem once. I was driving and suddenly heard a rattling noise that sounded like a box of bolts. It just so happened that I had ran over a box of bolts, the box got caught on my front stabilizer bar. Just an idea you may want to check before you tear into your engine
