Anyone tried the tornado? It supposedly delivers 5-10 hp and improves gas mileage by 15-25%. Since my D1 gets 13 mpg I'm thinking it might be worth it.

I have not tried it but as Flava Flav says, "Don't believe the Hype".

More seriously, check the archieves, this has been discussed and the consensus is that it is all mojo...

I have three of them on my '98 Discovery. The numberers don't lie-believe it when they claim the 5-10 hp and 15% better gas mileage. I figured if one of them would give you that benefit, then three of them would give you 15-30 Hp gain and 45% better gas mileage. It turns out that it worked. I used to get about 15 mpg, now I get almost 24 mpg. They really do work!!!

Don't forget other high quality and reputable performance improvement products, such as those sold by Kaleco.

If any bullshit item actually worked like they advertised don't you think the car manufacturer's would use it as Orignal Equipment??? Better fuel economy and more power is a big selling point. Someone should ask Car & Driver or Road & Track to test them out.

I love on the 3am infomercials when the old lady says shes not afraid to pull out in traffic anymore with her Tornado. "It gave my car so much more power"

Check out the following, I have seen them for sale on eBay...its the same principle as the "tornado" except this one is electric and acts as a supercharger @ a whopping 1 psi!

Why not take all this a step further and simply heat or cool the gasoline before it goes in the engine? Maybe using the differant sides of Peltier chips and control whether you want the gasoline cold, normal, or hot with a 3-way toggle switch. ...theoretically it would work.

Hey Samuel,
by my meager math an improvement from 15 to 24mpg represents a 60% increase. Dude, its even BETTER than you thought!!! Amazing. Wonderous. Lucrative. Will it clean the ATF off my driveway too?

Hey, Not to put a damper on but I stuck one in my truck, 96 disco 116k, went up from 265(avg) a tank to 310(avg) plus bit of HP too...not much but that extra 40 miles per tank makes a diff

Hey Corey...mine did that too from December to January.
I don't have the Tornado, either, so it's probably the gas.

I'd check your dyno-pants again, too.

Thanks for the info. I figured it was bull. Guess I'll just have to go for the cat-back exhaust afterall.

What? And the cat-back exhaust is going to increase your mileage?

Looks like you've been talking with Ms. Information...

Yes, an exhaust with a less restricted flow will improve gas mileage and power. But some engines require a certain amount of back-pressure in order to have the most power.

example: Taking the catalytic coverters off the normally aspirated '90+ 300zx will actually decrease the power by approx. 10hp yet using less restricted mufflers will add 10-15hp.

So keep the cats and take off the stock muffler(s). Also, removing the cats may also screw with the computer because of not reading the oxygen sensors therefore the engine may run like crap.

Re: free-flowing exhaust.

Don't know how relevant this is, but the LR V8 has a rep for burning exhaust valves, and the freer flowing the exhaust is, the more likely the exhaust valve is to burn, right?

Yes about the exhaust valves.

Anyone here have a supercharged Discovery? I just wanted to hear any owners comments on them.

I saw a bright red (tan leather) Disco1 with the safety devices(?) rack running a supercharged 4.6 for sale one time...it had 30k miles on the new engine and they only wanted $12k but it was before I was seriously in the market for one.

I believe a few people on this board have supercharged their Rover V-8's (whether in a Defender, Disco or RR). The consensus varies between "works just fine" to "the bottom end can't take it."

WRT burning exhaust valves...am I hearing you guys right?
If the exhaust was free-flowing, has the right design of port-velocity and minimal reversion, it would help the exhaust move away from the exhaust valve faster preventing the valve from absorbing as much heat, leading to cooler exhaust valves.

The heads on the Rover V-8 have restrictive exhaust ports which contribute more to burnt valves than any free-flowing exhaust you'd bolt-on south of the restrictive manifolds and cats.
Why don't your guys lurk the Range Rover forum; some guy just installed some tubular headers from Janspeed...if your thoughts on valves are correct, he should be in the shop any time now.

Finally, there has to be some congruence in the size of the exhaust ports, manifolds and exhaust, relative to the size of the engine, usable RPM range and state-of-tune. Putting that band-aid on your elbow isn't going to fix the scrape on your knee...
