Just wondering, I was looking at one as a commuter car. Its a 190E with a 2.6, AT 121k miles, really nice condition and asking $6000. Seemed reasonable, I drive 65 mile round trip to and from work and want something easier on gas. Also I want to upgrade to lockers and bigger tires on my truck, I don't want to do that while I drive my disco that much every week. I get 16 mpg now in my disco and would hate to get worse. What should I look for as problem areas on the 190E, I am meeting the owner tommorrow and they are suppose to have all the records since new, dealer maintained. Are the parts more expensive than disco's? Am I crazy to want this as a commuter? Seemed to be a nice car, thought it would give me a nice highway commuting ride that was safe as my disco. Any help is appreciated.

What year? My mom drove a 190e 86 or 87 cant remember the exact year. I hated it rode like a skateboard. I had an uncle that drove an 83 300td very comfortable and very reliable. He sold it about 5 years ago with about 450k on the clock. Only thing that was ever done was a paint job and seals to the engine.

I think Al Hang just bought one. I have a real old '73 2dr 280C sedan. As with any european cars, they would need much more attention than their japanese or american counterparts, but since you're used to that with the Disco, it shouldn't be too bad. eBay will be a good source for MB related items as well. Goodluck!

...as is with any compact cars, the 190 won't ride like your S or E class would.

Yeah, I've been eyeballing a '96 or newer E Class. They seem easily had for under $30K. Sweet.

Friend in Atlanta commutes 60 miles or so to and from work in a '92 300 something or other. Got well over 200,000 miles on it and it looks brand new and drives like a dream. They are very well made cars.

300E's are quite nice too and if you look around, you can find them fairly cheap. When I was a kid, I used to work as a lot-boy for a Benz dealership and got to drive all the cars. I found the 300E's to be sort of the best all-around Benz.

It's a 91. I checked out Blue Book and it might be selling it for about $600 to much, but he said it is best offer. I was looking for a compact as a commuter, so it's probably better than a honda civic for ride quality. Besides I'm driving a 95 disco 1 with an OME hd lift, so I'm sure anything will be a ride improvement. Anything I should look for? How about older MB's? I know they rust but I pass by two 70 era sedans, 300's maybe, during my commutes. Had thought about stopping and checking them out, but I don't know enough about MB's to feel comfortable about ones that old. But if I'm used to owning a rover my guess I am used to leaks and constant maintenance. :)

I owned both a 5spd 190D and auto 300D right up until we started buying Rovers. The 190D was a great little car. By the time I sold that one, it had 190K on it and the 300D had 250K. Both ran like champs up until time of sale and both were great and comfy highway cars. Despite being smaller, the 190 was my favorite.

Sorry didnt catch your second post...

If you have a choice, the Diesels are long term beasts as long as you keep the oil in them and other service religously. My 190 dripped about as much as one of the Rovers the 300 less. If you can get your hands on one, the 5spd 190D is really a fun ride and you get to make other MB owners envious when they stroll over look in and see the stick shift. :)

give the E36 (92-98) BMWs a chance (318, 325, 328). I have a 325i that is the perfect companion to my disco. helps keep the mileage off, is a great commuter and is suprisingly sporty if you know how to drive it correctly. Plus you can actually get a manual transmission.
