So, of course, my driver side rear window decided it had enough of this up and down business and opted for early retirement.(actually both rear windows stopped working but the d-side is the one that is stuck two inches down. I checked the fuses and they were good so I proceeded on to the tech write-up on ECU removal.

"15 min."

ha.

I don't know if this is a 96 vs 97 sort of problem but my ECU wasn't about to come out. First the harnesses were impossible to pull out then the 7mm screws were inaccessable. The bottom one CANNOT be disconnected the green hinged box below it completely blocks it and the nut is sunken into the plastic housing. I got the ECU loose but the edge of the glove box frame stopped it cold. So I quietly and humbly put it all back together till I can find more info or go to the dealership.

two questions?

1)what the hell did I do wrong?

2)Is there a way to manually roll up the window for the time being. I'm supposed to go out to Borrego again tomorrow and I'd like to keep out the trail dust, or at least have the option to keep it out.

thanks for your help and happy trails.

The ECU slides in between two plastic tabs on the top and bottom of the box it is in. Flex the top of the plastic box and tilt the ECU horizontal. It will come out then.

I got the ECU to slide and it came out about 3/4 of the way but then hit the edge of the glovebox frame. Are you saying that twisting the housing will get it out at a higher angle to get it over the housing or just loose from the plastic box?

thanks for your help

Jack,

Have you tried the window switch after you dirve the car for say 15-30 minutes. i have the same problem but it seems the welds on the ECU need to heat up a bit.

unfortunately, I have and that no longer works. That used to be the case but now the rears have completely shut down.

any ideas on getting it up manually for the time being?

thanks

Jack,
If you can get it angled inside the box like this (/) it will slide around the glove box frame. You can be a little rough with the ECU, it is just a bunch of relays, pots, and caps. You have to take the rear door skin off to access the motor to get the window up. It is NOT worth the trouble. If you think you are having troubles now, wait until you break half of the plastic tabs holding your door on. They aren't worth a piss!

Rob,
Mine did the same thing, but it finally shot craps after about a month. The fix in the tech section took me about 30 minutes.

Jack,

If you pull the skin off the back door you can easily access the window mechanics and lift it back up. The hardest part is making sure those plastic tacks that hold the skin on don't crack. I keep a bunch of them at the house b/c of that. Go home tonight and pull the skin off and fix it.
How much did you pay for a new ECU?

Thanks Chad, I'll make another attempt and be a little less gingerly with the ECU (after all, it's not like the damn thing works now).

Rob,
I'm going to make another attempt at the ECU before I go after the window mechanism. Sounds like it's an even bigger hassle. I didn't buy a new ECU yet, I was planning to resolder as per the article in the tech section.

thanks for your help guys.

SUCCESS!
one little re-weld and the card was good to go. with experience it is a 15 minute job. I also learned you don't have to unscrew the glove box hinges. The lever will simply pop out of it's groove if you lift it upwards. The windows are operable and dweb saved me cash again!

thanks all.

Jack,

You couldn't figure out how to lift the lever on the glove box but you can weld the ECU?
Can I send my ECU to you I'm afraid to get near it. i think last time I used my soldering iron I almost set the house on fire.
Glad you are good to go!
