I know most of you who read this will be driving nice big V8´s but maybe someone can shred some light onto my problems.
Ok several problems, maybe there all connected in some way or maybe not.
1.When starting from cold engine does not burst into life but coughs, splutters, popping noises from exhaust and then eventually picks up, this then turns into an uneven and lumpy tickover. It feels like the engine is being starved of feul.
2.lots of white smoke when starting this eventually disapears after a minute.
3.Engine temperature does run slightly warm when driven at 130 kph, but if driven at 120 kph it stays normal.
4.Even at normal running temperatures it still feels like the engine is being held back.

Initial feeling said that it´s feul/air starvation. Changed feul filter and drained water sedimenter. Changed air filter. Got injectors reconditioned. Still the same problem. Reset valves. Still the same problem. Starting to think that it could be the head gasket or injection pump timing. Although it does not use any water. The worst/expensive nightmare is that it could be the injection pump.

Anyone have any suggestions.

The smoke won't go away if it's the head gasket (well, it will if it runs out of water). I don't know much about diesels but with a petrol engine smoke on start up is a sign of burnt valves or rings but that shouldn't always make the engine feel like its being held back. May need to check the compression anyways. Also, I am sure the injection pump can be tested too.

What about the catalytic converter or do they even have them? (when they go bad they tend to have the consistency of porcelin and do not allow the exhaust to pass through properly or at all)

...and what about the choke, could it possibly be getting too much fuel? (or do they even have chokes?)

My suggestions may be completely wrong but like I said I don't have much experience with diesel engines. I do want a diesel Disco or D90 though.

Just check injector pump timing. Could be 1 tooth out. Not that hard to do (and cheap)

Jo!
The bad starting to me sounds like bad heater plugs. They are cheap to replace - and easy to check. Start from that vantage point, paying particular attention NOT getting scared from possibility of head gasket etc.
You might find smth useful links on ottos site:

I'd try changing the glow plugs, then re-bleed the fuel system. Start as far back as you can, and keep bleeding as you move forward... both sides of the filter, both sides of the distributor, all of the injectors.....

Check injector pump timing.
Check fuel pipelines for air entrances (connectors between fuel pump, fuel filter and injector pump).

How many miles are on it? I am guessing not a head gasket but bad valve guides and seals causing leak down and compression loss.

Gasket
How is the oil consumption? If a 200 TDI has a blown head-gasket, it usually starts to burn it's own oil. But that doesn't affect starting or performance in advance. I would also suggest you check the timing. When has the belt been changed?
