Hooked up with Landrover of Scottsdale for an outing today and finally went on some trails with my month-old 96 Disco. Impressive bit of machinery. The trail was rated a 3, so it wasn't too challenging, but man was it nice to flex the axles a bit and watch the mix of rovers go through their paces. 80-degrees in the desert, beautiful wheeling weather ...

You certainly become aware of driver skill in a mix like this. The group leader, and the mechanic that followed the group, both had bone stock Disco series 1's. (The leader did have BFG ATs in the original size, while the mechanic had the original style Michelins). They could both maneuver up stuff a Disco 2 with 2" lift and 32" MTs couldn't get up. Driver experience certainly helped and it was great to see what a stock Disco can do. (I didn't even try that one hill, so I don't want to sound like I'm criticizing the Disco 2 driver. We in the group are all still learning what the trucks can do, and that's why we were out there.)

Most impressive was the 03 Rangie. Despite IS which I know people dislike, it kept its feet on the ground better than the stock Disco 2 that was behind it. I was two vehicles behind the Rangie and right behind a Disco 2 ... the Rangie was just plain impressive. I never saw two wheels off the ground, and the Disco 2 had two wheels off numerous times over similar lines.

There were two Freelanders there. They certainly don't have a Disco's capabilities, but for what they are they did quite a good job. A RAV, Forrester or any of the competitors would not have made it through what the Freelanders did.

Sorry for the long post, it was just exciting to get my feet a little dirty today ... this damn rover bug has infected me bad.

dead stock Rav4 finished the Dakar rally a few years ago...so dont bet your 96 D1 on that statement.

sounds like you had fun

I'm wanting to go to school in Scottsdale. I am probably going to fly out soon to see the area. (Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture) Hopefully before everyone moves to the Wisconsin campus for the summer.

Just checking....your talking about Scottsdale, Arizona right?(I don't know of any others)

I drove (actually passenger bc I was only 9) through AZ on a trip to Cali and back but I don't remember too much about the area.

"Driver experience certainly helped and it was great to see what a stock Disco can do."

That is the statement off the year. Yes, all the fancy equipment in the world is great; but it all comes down to knowing which line to take how much gas etc. I have learned this lesson over and over again each time I go out.

i suspect the CDL had a lot to do with the disco1's ability with all the talk of lifted tires.

It would have been interesting to try a few hills with and without the CDL on so I could see for myself what the difference is.

The trip was a lot of fun, certainly a better trip than I expected. It's nice to see people actually taking these things off-road - especially that new $70K Rangie. I certainly did stuff I would not have done if I were out by myself, so that in-itself made the trip worthwhile. It's fun to begin exploring the capabilities of these trucks instead of being a web-wheeler.

yes, Jason, it is scottsdale arizona.

Good to see another disco wheeler in AZ not many land rovers in Phx compared to Seattle. I'm one of those guys that takes my 02 rr whellin and the only time it ever gets washed is when the dealer does it. I ussually wheel in the cave creek area. I can't wait to get back in AZ. I really miss the weather It seems like it has been raining non-stop for 3 weeks here in WA. If you see my dark blue rr out wheelin flag me down and say what's up, I love meetin new land rover owners out on the trails

PrescottJ:

How do you like the dealer service in Seattle? Which dealer - downtown or Bellevue?

Thanx.

FUCK SEATTLE and FUCK the new one in Fife. I really like the Bellevue dealership but they have been in the process of moving a couple blocks down the street. I went and did service at the FIFE Staelership which is a Lexus, Jaguar, Land Rover dealership and they gave me a toyota echo for a rental car and I'm 6'2" and they were really exspensive. Seattle I have to worry if my lights, brushbar, roofrack and stuff like that is gonna get stolen becuase where they store the vehicles is a really bad part of town. Bellevue is also where I purchased my 02 rr so I think when I take my 96 d1 that's why I get better treatment and they love seeing land rovers that have lots of mods. I also like Scottsdale and they seem to be pretty quick in getting my RR back to me.
