I'm begining to believe that my 96 Disco is Jinxed. After having engine problems with my 96 disco, I replaced my engine with a used wrecking yard motor (supposily with 55K mile) 4 weeks ago. Everything was running just great and smooth.

Driving down the freeway this morning.. Out of the blue KAPOW !! Blue smoke behind me. Pulled over and oil EVERYWHERE !! and a hole on the side of the block and a connecting rod hanging out the ripped oil pan.

Called the wrecking yard guy and he said doesn't have a 4.0 available but will give me back my money. I hope he's honest about this..

I'm REALLY begining to hate this thing.. I'm probably going to get a short block, transfer everything over,, cut my losses and sell it.

Or get priest to exorcise it..

Ouch, hate to hear that my friend. I'm at 137k and still running, maybe not running strong but still running. Ol' Drippy is still awaiting the exhaust manifolds you sent me.. hold on to her, she'll make you a believer sooner or later.. Peace.. Roberto

Where did you get the engine??? I got a transmission from a guy in NC out of a 97 he said had 55k miles.

I really hate automatics but I was told the 5-speed transmissions were designed for the 2.5 liter diesel engine and they were having alot of problems because of the power increase to the 3.9/4.0 gasoline tends to tear them up. Then again, I ended up replacing my slushmatic at 120k miles anyways.

Anyone have problems with the manual transmission and has anyone done a successful transmission conversion from automatic?

I was having a hard time finding a silver Disco 5-speed, I am sure they exist...just couldn't find one. I think a silver 5-speed diesel would be the beginning of my ultimate Discovery.

Well, you always run the risk of inheriting an abused or otherwise shot motor when you buy used. They don't call 'em junk yards for nothing.

At least you're getting your money back -- hope you can recoup the labor cost.

If the rest of your truck is in good enough shape and you otherwise enjoy your Rover, it might be worth getting a new 4.6 and reprogram your fuel map -- and I mean a totally new long block, front cover/oil pump and water pump -- or at least a rebuilt one with a decent warranty. If you intend to keep driving it why take the risk of salvaging parts from a motor that's blown up once already?

What was the problem with your original motor?

tbow,

I will never buy a block off a shelf in a bone yard. I want to see what it came out of.

the best way to do it is to locate yards that have a number of trucks and go see them.

find one that rolled or got smacked from the side or otherwize messed up. but dont but one off the shelf.

also av oid theft recoveries...they can have had some bad stuff done to them as well.

did you do the swap yourself or did you have it done?

did the labor source find the motor?

if so you could have the labor comming back as well...hang in there it gets better

RE: manual transmissions.

After I put in a 4.6, my original R380 started having synchro problems in 2nd and 3rd shortly thereafter. However, I replaced it with a rebuilt unit from Ashcroft about 25,000 miles ago and have had no problems since. Apparently Ashcroft has strengthened the R380 to hold up to the rigors of a 4.6 or a 5.2 -- ECR swears by them. I'm also using Redline MTL, which is supposed to be a big help.

Well folks, I did the work myself so if the guy gives me back my money, like he said he would, I'll just be out my time. I'll either buy a short block or rebuild my old block. I figure it should cost me about 1,500 - 2000 dollars for parts and machine work.

I thought I got a great deal on it, but it's getting to be a full time mechanical job. So afterwards, it's most likely going on sale.

I know lot's of people have great luck with boneyard motors, but this is my first and last.. No more boneyard motors for me..

lol...where do you think lots of that ebay stuff comes from?

I have a friend that lives here in chicago, he cruises the POR board...then hits the bone yards takes pics posts them on ebay. if they sell he goes and pulls them outa the bone yard.talk about a free inventory. dont get me wrong he is doing a great service...the bone yards here in the midwest arent as picked over for wheeling parts as the ones out west appear to be.

now I am not saying bone yard parts are crap...I am saying you need to verify what your getting. this can be done by developing a real relationship over a number of years or it can be done by going and seeing the motor still in the vehicle ,seeing what sent it to the bone yard then marking it or taking the engine serial #'s and having them pull it for you.

buying motors blind off a shelf you are gonna end up with a dud from time to time.thats just how it works

Yeah.. I meant good deals on rebuilt motors. They are available. How about LRX. There have been several new motors also. I'm not saying that these motors will be cheaper than junk-yard. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

You got your engine at british recyclers. I go there all the time they are pretty good guys if they get to know you.

No. I didn't get it at British recyclers. Normally I wouldn't buy from a Boneyard, because you really don't know what your getting. I just thought this would get the rover going for a while while I decide whether to keep it or not.

Like I said before, no more boneyard motors for me.

Just a update on this.. The guy came through. 1200 bucks cash, just like I paid him. It also amazed him to see the rod hanging out the bottom of the oil pan.

Got a hold of Ron Brown from a post on DiscoWeb. Got NEW short block for a GREAT price. Delivery in 2-3 weeks. Thanks Ron..

Will get the heads done with new guides, springs. Got new lifters, rockers/shaft, and camshaft from previous project with ticking noise,(which is why I replaced the motor in the first place).

When it's all said and done, should have new engine with LR warranty (at least the lower half) anyway. Total I figure with all the Short block, parts/gaskets and machine work just a hair under 2K. Not bad, I guess for a british nighmare. I thought I would have learned with my 1970 MGB GT..

Anyone want to buy a LR with a new engine ??

Thanks DiscoWeb and Ron..

You might look into new heads and valve gear and timing gear, especially if your old heads came off a motor that was overheated. Sometimes when these aluminum motors get overdone, they NEVER run right again, no matter how many parts you change out. I had a 3.9 completely disassembled and put back together not once but twice, and it still made that damned ticking sound.
