Heya everyone,
I have a great today. "mostly". The mostly part comes from the fact that after getting up at 6:30 to head north to Highway 2 just North of Seattle, eathing breakfast, meeting my friend and his new 87' Jeep Cherokee Beater, eating Breakfast at McD's, hearing about the Shuttle explosion, then heading up Highway 2, I got a Speeding Ticket.
Damnit, I keep forgetting with my 245/75-16's my speedo is almost right on now. I cant cruise at 70 indicated any more. :-(
Anyhow, we drove to Sultan Washington to meet about 7 other Rovers (4 D1's, 1-D2, and 2 RRC's) if memory serves. At about 8:45am we left Sultan and headed to some trails just east of there. My Friend and I had to leave after about 1-2hrs so we didn't do the loop with them. But We did Air down, head through some very fun mud puddles that were smooth, long, and varied from Axle deep to Door Sill Deep. (And MUCH deeper as I found out later) We took some pics of the others as they crossed a very nice rocky river with some decent flow down it, And then headed back for our own adventure. We really didn't feel comfortable doing the river crossing alone when we would have had to turn back.
ANyhow, I'll let the others post about how the loop was. But our little trip was great. We mainly just ran little access roads to the power lines but found some challenging lines and good mud in the process. The first STUCK was my Friends Jeep in some mud after sliding sideways and getting a bit high centered. A simple tug pulled him righ off. I follwed with an almost stuck as my hood dove underwater suddenly. I opted not to continue, quickly put it in reverse and was able to back out with a little left foot braking. So I went around and made the hill climb I was aiming for from a side approach. I made it but barely, God i LOVE my Dunlop RT's. Way better than all the AT's I've run in the past.
2nd stuck was also the Jeep. Admittidly, he has a stock Cherokee with 225/75-15 tires. Small compared to mine. But it has the factory off-road kit which has Bilstiens, lifted 1" and skid plates. This was also Dans first time ever driving off-road. :-) So I made him take a trail he didn't want to take. "I'm such an ass". I made the BIG mistake of saying, C'mon, it will only take 10 minutes, then we'll go. Well, the Gods got ready and a Stump that I barely made it over nabbed him. I though he could go high and avoid it but the rear slid off the stump and ended up breached on it, High and dry. Crap, wish we had a High Lift. But luckily I did have the Cum-Along as it was tight trees and it would be very difficult to do a vehicle pull. We built a ramp of some Rocks, and was able to pull him off, free and clear after abotu 45 minutes and 3 seperate pulls. Thakns GOD for those cheesy factory skid plates as they did their job for the Transfer CAse. :-)
Well, Time to head back. I take the scenic route through the water. It gets deeper, I keep going, gets deeper, I think, I cant get much deeper..........I WAS WRONG..........
Oh well, Lockers would have been nice, maybe if I would have punched it I could have made it through forward but who knows how deep it would have gotten. I still had a ways to go and after my early dive, and with no snorkel, I stopped. ANd was stuck. Two tugs by the Jeep and I was free though.
Altogether a GREAT day. We both got Stuck (I consider that mandatory :-) Dan got introduced to offroading, and we both had fun.
How did the rest of you 7 fair????
