We replaced CV's on a friends truck yesterday due to noise, and here's what we found. (Sorry, no spectacular blown up parts photos :) )

Anyway, being relatively unschooled on CV joint's - wondered what could/did cause this wear?

CV's were low mileage - 15-20K. Genuine GKN/spicer parts - circa 1993

Tire size was not extreme - 235/85/16. Friend in question does have a heavy right foot with a built RPI 3.9 which is probably the problem, but wanted insites from anyone regardless.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill:
I have seen many CV joints. That one looks like it has many miles and marginal lubrication. If it really did only have 20K miles, it must have been driven hard, or dry, or both.

The only times I've seen CVs blow up with low mileage have been when they were run dry. Mine have 160K on them and are in acceptable shape in spite of the 'wheeling I have done in the past (where is the time to go 'wheeling anymore?).

Last fall, I pulled apart the front end on a '94 with about 90K on it. Even though the swivels were leaking badly and had low oil, the CVs were in much better shape than those pictured above.

Peace,
Paul

Thanks Paul - these also had been run in the LR one-shot grease which was not contaminated and in fine shape and full up ?? This is why I'm so stumped.

Bill,
CV

this spot looks more like a chip then a wear mark , that combined with the built 3.9 ,heavy foot and low miles makes me think shock loads.

might just be cv's arent strong enough on the street for this application?

this guy have a stick or auto?

Musky,
Thanks - stars were worn on all races, but that mark is actually an indented groove from wear - it does look like a chip in the photos. The grooves are deepest at the outer edge of the stars

The truck has an autobox.

Funny thing - I guess the old suffix a/b CV's are that much stronger because they lasted him 255,000 miles (original 87 truck)we with later CV's (entire front axle actually), but they just aren't holding up.

BTW - very little of the time on these CV's is off road - only a couple hundred miles and nothing too extreme in that. He does have a front TT.

We had hoped to at least save the bells to rebuild, but no luck :(

1998 should - one way to know for sure - pull the fill plug, sight plug, or drain plug (if your model has a drain plug). You'll see the telltale black grease.

Can you tell if your CV are worn by not taking it apart? Any noise at all.
Thanks

My guess? Bad heat treat on the star which caused the balls to get loose... Under a normal load they were allowed to wiggle too much causing the excess wear, once the ball started "bouncing" around in there, it work hardened the surface of the star which started chipping. Just a thought
