For the 2nd time I have found myself missing the dang gas cap off my '97 D1. Last time I happened to be in Atlanta near a dealer and wheeled in for a replacement. Well, now I'm at home and there's not a dealer for 130 miles. Anyone know if a standard autoparts store will have anything to fit? By the way, still for sale. 1997 Disco with all the trail mods (and LR Adventure rack) 73000 miles for $13500. See my gallery or email me. Ron Ward Columbus, GA |

I have a related question about the gas cap. I have a '96 and my cap doesn't seem to be vented because I have a massive vapour influx when I open it. I've also run out of gas once when the fuel warning light didn't come on. Since then it has come on several times. What trips the fuel warning light? Could it have been defeated by a vapour lock? Just idly wondering if replacing my gas cap would prevent this from happening again. Yes I know this is a stupid newbie question but it is a serious one FWIW. |

Wow, a $13,500 gas cap with a free vehicle to haul it with. What a deal. |

I thought that was why you had a vented gas cap - so that wouldn't happen. I thought that was what "vapour lock" was... |

No vapor lock is an entirely different issue most commonly associated with hot carburetors and fuel lines exposed to engine heat. Ron Ward |

Then why did they always say when I was a lad in the winter in Canada to not leave your car overnight with an almost empty tank because otherwise you'd get vapour lock? And what's the point of a vented gas cap if not to keep the pressure in the gas tank at 1 atmosphere? And and and :-) while I'm on the podium, any ideas about why my fuel light didn't come on that one time? Thanks for your response Ron (and other) and sorry for stealing your thread! |
