Hi, I have just got a 2.5tdi 300 with an r380 gbox. It is difficuly going from 1st to 2nd, unless you double clutch or go to N then to 2nd with a blip of throttle. Lots of whines around 50-65mph. Will a good gbox, tbox, and axles oil change with some decent synth oil help, molyslip, is my clutch or worse???? please help its a bit worrying!!!! thanks.

My transmission (R380 on a 300TDI)is smooth and quite, I would suspect a bad 2nd gear synchro. You could try synth but it may only mask the real problem.

Cold weather make things worse.

Which oil do you run on your R380? It is supposed to use Caltex MTF94 which improve shifting.

This will improve matters, but I'm afraid it does sound like a problem with synchrohubs = gearbox rebuild.

Where do you live? LEGS in the UK will charge You £650+vat for a rebuilt box, new clutch etc, and fitting the lot. I consider that a very good price, bearing in mind what you would have paid just to have the clutch changed.

Roverly Yours, Frode

Likely the brass rings on the synchro but if it has gone on for a while expect the rest of the synchro and possibly the gears to be worn. The whine indicated bearing or gear wear probably due to the bits of synchro floating around. The input bearing is particularly known for this. It is too small for what it needs to do and sings when worn.
