I need to replace the cable on one of my Warn winches (M8000), and was wondering if there are any issues to consider if I wanted to dump the 5/16 standard Warn cable and replace it with a stronger 3/8 cable?

Any saftey concerns or mechanical limits that would really shoot the idea down or is it no biggie?

Thanks in advance,

Chris von C.

Well, your winch can only pull a certain load, regardless of cable thickness. The larger cable is going to be stronger (assuming equal quality) but it is also thicker which will reduce the total length of cable you can load onto your winch. On mine, I had a choice of 150 feet of 5/16" or 125 feet of 3/8". I went with the 3/8" and it has been fine.

Thanks Tony,
Other than the length, I didnt think there would be, but with the amount of people that visit the board, it never hurts to ask just in case.

Long as you can attach it to the drum, and the drum dia isn't smaller than the minimum radius of the cable you want, there wouldn't be any problem.
You can get good wire rope, nearly as strong as the plasma ropes, from McMaster Carr. It's not cheap though, about $2.50 a foot I think

Look at the 6 x 19 Class IWRC, Premium

Here are some wire rope basics and terms
