Hey guys - What size jack stands do you guys use for working on your trucks? I was out looking to pick up a hydraulic jack and some stands and it didn't even occur to me that they came in so many sizes LOL. My DII is about 5000 lbs (but am in the process of sticking on some sliders and ARB). Will a 3 ton jack and jack stands be enough, or should i play it safe and go bigger?

Thanks
Jason

Go to Northern Tool and get some 6 ton jack stands. They have better reach which you will need once you have lifted your truck. You can never be too safe either.

The stronger ones are usually bigger / taller too, and there's no issues with getting the taller ones under there with a rover, unlike most passenger cars. That's a good enough reason IMHO

Walmart has some nice 12 ton ones. 2 feet tall. You need something that can go under the frame and get the truck up high if need be.

jason,
a rule of thumb when lifting a vehicle on stands is that the total weight capacity of the stands should me at least 10% more than the weight of the vehicle. i.e. 1 ton stands x 4 = 8000 lbs, or 4 ton weight capacity, plenty strong to hold a 2 1/2 ton disco. But if it make you feel better, go bigger. The taller the stand the more room you have to move around.

go with the taller ones i bought a pair of standard 3 ton stands from kragen..they work greeat!, but for some work they are just to darn short. especially when you need to support the frame rather than axles..cheers

Thanks for all the help guys. I am up in Canada so went down to Canadian Tire and got a set of 6 ton stands. They stand 24 5/8 " tall at max height. Also picked up a Michelin 3 1/2 ton hydraulic jack to get the pig up on them haha. At least I wont curse quite as much when trying to load on those MT/Rs.
